Per Jeff Passan: " The A's have acquired outfielder Craig Gentry from the Rangers in exchange for Michael Choice, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). The A's will also receive right-hander Josh Lindblom from the Rangers, tweets Passan. Minor league second baseman Chris Bostick will head to Texas in the trade as well."

Not happy about losing Gentry's speed and defense, but a prospect of Choice's caliber (#2 in Oakland's system, former #10 overall pick) is a decent haul for Craig Gentry. This deal could just be the first domino to fall in a series of moves by JD, made entirely as a precursor to additional moves. Or it could just be its own separate entity. It's a risk/reward deal with Gentry being the known commodity and Choice being the unknown ceiling guy. I'm going to wait and see how things shake out both with the rest of the offseason and Choice in general before forming a strong opinion on this one. Gentry is just a platoon player, but he's an awfully valuable defender and base stealer. Never easy to part ways with those.

And Joe Nathan and AJP too. We knew they were likely gone already though. JD's got a few holes to fill now, that's for sure. It will be interesting to see what he's got planned. Apparently the Tigers are aggressively pursuing Choo.

Yeah, I hate it when one of our likeable guys gets shipped to such a despicable team. I wonder if Gentry will be required to grow out a trailer trash mullet now. Not so sure his kitten face squeaky clean image will play so well in front of the felons in the stands there.

Although we all love Gentry, Choice if he pans out to what scouts project should be the considerably better player and is 6 years younger. I still do not know exactly what the A's saw to trade the #2 in their system for Gentry who was never that high of a prospect in our system that I remember? Just seems odd

Listening to JD's comments, he seemed very high on this kid. I would make this type of deal every time. Who is the #2 kid in our system, Alfaro or Jackson? As much as I like Gentry, I wouldn't give up one of those guys for him if he were in Oakland

Baseball America has our #2 prospect as Wilmer Font with Brett Nicholas as our #1.

Choice becomes our #3 and Bostick doesn't crack the top 20

Cody Buckel seems rather high for a dude with a broken brain.

Also I would say Roogie is number 2 over Sardinas. That's based on a higher floor than ceiling though.

Thought the same about Buckel and Font

I was simply pointing out that Nicholas was not #1

lol yeah no way. We did a vote over at LSB for ranking prospects and the big names at the top are Alfaro, Roogie, Sardinas, and now Choice. Chi Chi got some love too.

I like this trade a lot. I liked Gentry as a fill-in, but I just don't think he is an every day player. Losing Nathan will hurt, but it's understandable letting him go at 39.

I don't know nearly enough about Choice to have any idea of how good a deal this might be. It is surprising to me that we dealt Gentry, however, since he was one of the few bright spots down the stretch last season. Hope he doesn't hurt us or help the A's too much in the future.

So Brett Nicholas, a guy that we never talk about and I don't have any idea about, is our best prospect? What?! That's gotta be inaccurate.

You should ignore bleacher report.

Yeah I had a couple cocktails and thought I read that on BA but when I went back and found it today and realized it was BR, I I disregarded it

Gentry was one of my favorite players. One article said Choice may develop into a .270 hitter with 25 homers. Defense and speed below Gentry. How is this suppose to help the club now? Put Moreland out there if you want 25 homers. Looks like the A's filled their need for 2014 and the Rangers didn't.
Fielder trade yes. This one no.
