I found this interesting...

There has not been a P that has gotten 300 K's in a season since 2002. Teammates Randy Johnson (334) & Curt Schilling (316) were the last to do it. Their combined 650 K's were 5 more than all 12 starting P's of the Twins that year. When will we see a P get 300 K's in a season again?

Interesting, given how badly batting averages continue to plummet.

Matt Harvey might give it a shot if he can pitch a whole season on his reconstructed elbow. Hopefully he can face the Braves a lot this year.

It's tough because a pitcher needs to have a lot of innings while maintaining a high strikeout rate. Usually the top strikeout rates for a starting pitcher are around 10 to 11 (9 x SO / IP). That would mean they need to go anywhere from 245 IP to 270 IP to reach 300 K.

I was really surprised when I found out about that. As far as who could be next...I really have no idea.

Very true.

while also adding the EXTREME defensive shifts that have been employed with greater frequency.

If it wasn't for the back injury, Darvish could have in 2013. He hit the DL around July and missed a couple starts (though it was during the ASB as well). Darvish had an 11.9 K/9 that year and finished with 277 K's in 209 IP in 32 starts.

I think that league BABIPs have been pretty steady the last several years, it really is all the strikeouts that have been cutting scoring down.
As mentioned above, the issue with getting 300Ks now is the low number of innings pitched by starters (many of whom are striking out a tremendous number of guys per inning). But, Price and Kluber were both around 270 last season, and Price in particular didn't have a fantastic year by his own standards. Kershaw struck out about 10.85/9IP but missed some starts due to injury...if he had kept that rate up and made 6 more starts like he did in '13, he would have been in the 290s for Ks.
Unless the strike zone is redefined soon, we'll probably see 300K again soon.
How incredible that little Pedro Martinez did this in 29 starts and 2 relief appearances in '99?

I hope sale never does it. high k totals usually equals less innings pitched in this day and age

Sale could do it if he gets 35 starts 35x7.1=248.5/9=27.6x11=303

Only problem hasnt pitched more than 30:suds:

That's presuming that his K rate doesn't decrease as he pitches more innings in a season (which it often does).

**closers**

I play in a pretty serious full 30 team sim league where I drafted Aroldis 1st overall in the rookie draft the year he defected. Andrew Bailey went 2nd with very good stats in what was the current season, and then Bryce Harper went 3rd. For years the owner picking 2nd has taken endless shit (and given himself endless shit) for taking Bailey over Harper. During our most recent rookie draft a week ago he said something along the lines of "I still can't believe I passed on Bryce Harper for a one inning pitcher". And I comforted him by saying "hey don't look now, but partly thanks to the Reds I did the same thing!"
