COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M's first Heisman Trophy winner, John David Crow, has passed away. He was 79 years old.

The University confirms Crow passed away around 9:30 Wednesday night, surrounded by his wife, Carolyn, and family.

Services are pending and the family requests privacy at this time.

Crow became Texas A&M's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1957 after leading Paul "Bear" Bryant's team to an 8-3 record and a Gator Bowl berth against Tennessee. Crow, who came back from a rash of early-season injuries to win the award, was the legendary Bryant's only Heisman Trophy winner.

The 1957 Aggies got off to an 8-0 start and were ranked No. 1 in the nation when it became public that Bryant intended to leave A&M for Alabama at the conclusion of the season. The Aggies then lost their final three games by a combined six points (Rice, 7-6, Texas, 9-7, and Tennessee, 3-0).

Crow remained a visible representative of the Texas A&M athletics department. Crow had served as the Director of Athletic Development for seven years before he retired in 2001. Prior to directing A&M's athletic development, Crow had served the four and a half years as athletic director at Texas A&M. He is credited with moving A&M to the forefront of collegiate athletics, especially in the area of gender equity. He stepped down from his athletic director position to devote more time to a business partnership with Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's son. Prior to being named athletic director in December of 1988, Crow served as associate athletic director from 1983-88.

Crow played 11 years in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers. He was a first-round pick of the Chicago Cardinals in 1958. He went to the Pro Bowl four times, had a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons and was named to the All-Pro team of the 1960's as a halfback. He also coached for Bryant as an assistant at Alabama and served as head coach and athletic director at Northeast Louisiana. In addition, he was an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers.

RIP, a true legend. Loved seeing him and Earl Campbell at UT/atm games, I guess by the time they play again it'll be an old Ricky Williams and Johnny Football.
