For the love of the game

Johnny Fontaine played his ball back in the day.. when there was no DH or night games..he sold insurance in the off season..bought kids on the street tickets to get in..always flashed his signature grin..a pitcher by trade..he tried to get everything out of his arm day after day..yeah he threw a spit ball..even threw what he called a mud ball. Johnny Fontaine stood tall..6 foot eight ..a lanky right hander..who could blow the ball by the strongest kids in the show..he was always ready to go..and when his time was up..he stepped up to the mic during the middle of a doubleheader ..told all the fans why he played the game..He said he played ...

(Chorus) For the love of the game

A proud man..who gave it all he had

Pitched mostly complete games

Pitch counts were not around then

Played for the Giants..wore number 10

A Champion among Champions his right arm could sing

Johnny lived every American boys dream

(End of Chorus)

He never complained..was a riot during rain delays

He passed along wisdom..to the kids under him

Pitched a NO NO in New York on the 4th of July

He was a special pitcher ..who would stand out there and let it fly

Johnny played..

(Chorus)

Johnny played when he was sick..and when his arm felt like it would fall off

A dedicated teammate..he could put hitters to sleep

A 12 to 6 curve..he could drop the hammer down..he was supurb

Won the pennant one year..chased it down with 5 bottles of beer

Johnny always said..

(Chorus)

Johnny passed away one lonely October day..the playoffs were on ..no one really noticed he was gone..
but Johnny lived his dream..a baseball man down to his core..he even took time away to fight for his country..he gave us a thrill. Johnny always said..He played for the love of the game...

(Rock or Country)

(Dedicated to all the ballplayers who play for the love of the game.)
