The 1997 Nebraska team beats the 1997 Michigan team pretty soundly. I think Vegas had them as a hypothetical full touchdown favorite on a neutral field after the bowl games. I cannot stand Nebraska (maybe more than any other program), but I give them their credit.

I just had this conversation with a Michigan fan and he told me how "stacked" that 1997 scUM team was and how Nebraska would have been in trouble.

I wish the ncaa would allow exhibition games sponsored by someone. What if spring games were actual games?

If I recall correctly the orange bowl wanted to take both that year but michigan wanted the rose bowl rather than the opportunity to play the best team.

I don't think Michigan had a choice, the Pac 10/Big 10 Rose Bowl agreement was pretty binding.

That was the only positive of the BCS is that it was possible to match teams up regardless of bowl affiliation just wished it had worked a little better.

Nebraska scored twice as many points as Michigan did that year.
Nebraska had twice as many shutouts as Michigan did that year.
Michigan beat their arch rival by 6pts.
Nebraska beat their arch rival by 62pts.
Michigan won it's Bowl Game by only 5pts vs a weak Washington State.
Nebraska won it's Bowl Game by 25pts over Tennessee.

If you want a consensus National Championship you better not go at it with that kind of weak ass shit Mr. Carr.

And many would say that Nebraska would have curb stomped you into next week.

Weak arguement unless they played the same teams. Who cares what they did against lesser teams.

When you're the #1 team in the nation, they're all lesser teams and that's all you have to compare to.
What's your point.

The other "#1" also played lesser teams. Who cares. about those numbers. Those numbers do nothing.

Never thought I'd see the day a Buckeye fan defended Michigan.

Lloyd Carr is a jackass. T.O. could be complaining to this day that we didn't also win the A.P., but he has a little something called class.

Common opponents:

Michigan 27, Colorado 3
Nebraska 27, Colorado 24

Michigan 38, Baylor 3
Nebraska 49, Baylor 21

But somehow because Nebraska shut out Texas Tech and Kansas, it proves their defense was better.

Right.......

Nebraska played both those teams @Waco and @Boulder.
Michigan played both those teams in Ann Arbor.
Big difference.

Not defending scUM at all, I personally think Neb. would have killed them. My only point was those numbers meant nothing.

I watched both those teams that year and Nebraska was head and shoulders better than Michigan.
There's no doubt about it.

Michigan had a slightly better defense, but Nebraska had an overwhelming offense.
No comparison between the 2.

No comparison between the 2.

Michigan's defense never gave up more than 16 points all year, despite playing seven ranked teams, four of which were in the top 10. The fact that Nebraska played in Waco is irrelevant. Michigan had a much better defense (and likely the best CFB defense of my lifetime). Nebraska had a much better offense. We don't know who would win.

I'm glad that you think it was clear as day, but remember, Nebraska started the year at #6. Michigan started the year at #14. And yet somehow, both polls had Michigan actually jump Nebraska (the coaches poll gave Nebraska the split only after the bowl games, and possibly not coincidentally, after Tom Osborne announced his retirement). So if any team was clearly better, it was Michigan. Your biased 17 year old musings don't change that.

The B1G had two teams win a NC in one year. /thread

The AP means much more than the coaches poll though, so scUM is a bitch for complaining.

This

The Bowl Alliance and Bowl Coalitions (which preceded the BCS) was only agreed to by the SEC, ACC, Big 8, and SWC.

The Big 10 and PAC 10 wanted to keep their lock in the Rose Bowl.
