No chance anyone is going to heed that advice. Unfortunately there are a slew of advanced treats out there that defender and most free AV's just don't prevent and most home users lack the skill to use the various tools around to prevent them without those paid AV's. Now me at home? Yes, I only use defender and have for years. I also know I'm not falling for click bait or other social engineering type attacks and I scan anything I bring home. I also have free ransomware tools to help bolster my defenses. But again, I can't see most home users doing the same.

The newest Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware suite does a damn good job of that though, and it's a one time license fee and much cheaper than some of those "home security" products sold by the major vendors.
