eligibility question

a buddy of mine's son just got offered a basketball scholarship to a 2 year community college. if he goes there, plays 2 years, and then decides to go to a 4 year university, does he have 2 years eligibility remaining, or does years playing for a community college count against your eligibility at all?

His eligibility clock would begin ( 5 years to play 4) once he enrolls as a full-time college student (12 credit hours or more). I can only assume he would have to take at least 12 hours to be eligible to participate in athletics. If he plays, his eligibility clock would have begun.
