Dolphins suspend Derrick Shelby

Miami Dolphins defensive end Derrick Shelby was suspended indefinitely Monday following his arrest this weekend at a Fort Lauderdale nightclub.

The Dolphins cited Shelby for "conduct detrimental to the team."

According to a Fort Lauderdale police report, nightclub security said Shelby was touching women without their permission early Saturday. Shelby appeared intoxicated, was ordered to leave several times by an officer and refused -- asking, "What are you going to do?" -- the report said.

When officers tried to place Shelby in custody, he pushed away and took an aggressive fighting stance. He was placed on the ground and continued to resist, and officers used a Taser three times before he was subdued.

A mug shot showed Shelby with a swollen lower lip and a bruise on his cheek. He was released from jail on a $100 bond, and his attorney said Shelby is innocent.

Shelby's agent, David Canter, said in a statement Monday that Shelby has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"I spoke with Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey earlier this morning and was disappointed to hear that the organization has decided to suspend my client Derrick Shelby," he said. "I have met with Derrick and his defense attorney, Daniel Rosenberg. Derrick has entered a plea of not guilty and we look forward to Derrick resuming his football career. We will have no further comment on this matter."

The incident happened during the Dolphins' bye week.

"We were disappointed to learn about Derrick's arrest. Everyone in this organization is held to high standards of conduct and professionalism," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said in a statement. "Based on my conversations with Derrick and the information we have thus far, Derrick will be placed on Indefinite Club Suspension. When we have completed all of the necessary diligence, we will make a final determination on his discipline."

Shelby was a valuable member of Miami's defense. He played in all four games this season as a reserve and recorded six tackles and two sacks.

The Dolphins (2-2) will host the Green Bay Packers (3-2) on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bunch of morons and the kid was coming on way to ruin any momentum he built. Either way its guilty until proven innocent and I'm ok with this as it sounds like he was acting like an arse. Hopefully he learns from it and bounces back...

You can like, hate, or be indifferent about cops but the bottom line is that when they tell you to leave (right or wrong) you better leave because if you don't it's going to end badly for you.
