Harang went 10-10 with a 3.61 ERA in 31 starts for the Dodgers last year, but was shifted to the bullpen after the Dodgers acquired pitchers Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu in the offseason. Harang met with manager Don Mattingly Friday to discuss a role that appeared to be minimal. He had not appeared in a game this season.

Those aren't bad numbers, really. Should find a home somewhere.

He was solid for the Padres as well the year before. A reliable innings-eater.

As a rule, though, I don't like to pay market price for good free agent players. The price gets bid up by competitors until you are forced to overpay.

We have this season to determine what Timmeh and Zito's futures are with us. There are a number of arms in the minors who may be ready for a legit shot next year. A lot can happen in a year.

Agreed. I think Zeets gets extended for 2/20 and if Timmy pitches well he gets 3/35 or something similar. Both are unusual in that they are set for life with previous HUGE contracts and will take reasonably priced deals to stay in SF. If either should leave, then that opens up a spot for Kickham/Petit/Heston/Bonser/Fitzgerald/Gloor. I can't see us overpaying for Harangatang.

Throw in Kamp as a possible in-house solution as well.

I think Zeets and a 2/20 is a nice thought, but why would he sign that? That would, in essence, be signing a 1 year extension for 2M. I do not see that happening.

2/30? More likely.

I must be misunderstanding. Zito gets a min $7M next year (buy out). If he signs a 2/20, then he gets $13M more. He can't possibly think that *anybody* is going to give him $18M to pitch in 2014.

The G's only need to give him 11M to pitch in '14. The 7M is gone. Ignore it. And there is little doubt that they will exercise that option. Therefore, for him to sign a 2/20, he is getting 20M for 2 years instead of 18M for 1. The signing of a new contract would supersede the 7M buyout. MAYBE he would do a 2/25, but I would think that would be close to his absolute floor.

I think you're assuming he will vest with 200 innings; I don't see any way of that happening. My thinking is that he gets $7MM just to go away, so 20/2 is an additional $13MM and another year in the area.

I am not assuming he vests. I am assuming the G's pick up the option.

11M for a 4.00 - 4.50 ERA, 180 IP KNOWN quantity? I think you have to do that.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I think they'll extend him for another year

I am on board for that, but at what price? The 2/20 makes no sense for him to accept.

Well, lets say that he's a $10MM pitcher. What his agent has to gauge is if there is a team out there that is willing to go multiple years. If so, then Barry has to decide if he wants to leave the Bay Area. Everything I've read is that he is unwilling to do that. He doesn't seem to be about max money, and he's set for life financially. Maybe the doyers or Angels come into the picture since he lives down there but I can't see him leaving the state.

Lets say Sabes approaches him a couple days after the parade this November. He says "look, we're not going to pick up your option at $18MM, but we'd like to extend you at 2/20 or you can take 7 and cut a deal on your own."

Maybe Barry thinks "fuck that noise, I can get 2/20 from the Yanks AND 7 from the Giants" and walks. Maybe. Or maybe he decides he's got enough scratch and his agent counters at 2/24. They split the diff and he gets 2/22. That's $2 over market to reflect the $7 he gave up on the buyout.

That's how I'm looking at it anyway.

I can see a 2/24, but that is about as BCS for the G's that I can come up with. The Angels need pitching pretty bad, and I can absolutely see them making noise in the corner while we are trying get something done.

And with Timmeh likely gone after this year (my assumption), his best friend will be gone, so a little of the glue erodes.

Probably not adding much here, but at some point, and esp so for BZ, it's about more than the money. He's made a ton, and he has spent his whole career in the Bay Area, friends, family, home, etc. He knew he shat the bed for 5 seasons here, and redeemed himself last year big time, and he's riding that this year. He is now loved here - it's a story we can all relate to (well, except the scale of the money part!). I would have a hard time believing he would play anywhere else for a few dollars more, esp for him to play in those big money little-league ballparks in the AL East.
