There is no way anything we typically watch in this country would pass soccer.

Soccer is the king of the world and likely will be for a very long time.

Basketball is the only sport I can see doing it. Over the last 15 or so years, the world has really caught up in talent level despite organized play still being rather adolescent. FIBA is doing a pretty decent job standardizing rules and the NBA is working tirelessly reaching into new markets and setting up talent camps. Obviously it won't happen over night, but I say by 2030 or so, I wouldn't be shocked at all if basketball isn't just as big or close to it as soccer. The NBA would basically be like the EPL or La Liga, with other regions having smaller but just as successful leagues. And the FIBA World Basketball Championships overtake the Olympics and is the World Cup.

Maybe that XGames stuff? I don't know. If MarioCart were televised kids would prolly eat it up. Don't really see any mainstream sport that can top Soccer worldwide though.

Nobody in America gives two shits about soccer, so this data is irrelevant to me.

Nope.

It's the runaway most watched sport on earth. No other sport will overtake its popularity on planet Earth.

Most of the other 6.7 billion people on earth think of the NFL the same way our 0.3 billion think of soccer.

Personally, I love playing soccer, and can enjoy watching it on occasion. It's not my favorite spectator sport, though. Sometimes I wonder if that would change if ever went to a Sounders FC game, which friends tell me is a total blast.

Go to a sports bar on starting June 12th at 3 PM EST and get back to me......And go there again June 16th at 6 PM EST and get back to me

Nobody cares about Soccer in America but yet in 2016 we are hosting the Copa America as it will be the first time the tournament is held outside of South America

I'll tell you this. You can get me to watch a full Soccer game before you can get me to watch a full baseball game.

Nobody in America gives two shits about Soccer but the US went all out to host the 2022 WC before losing out and finishing in 2nd place.

Harris Poll -- NFL still most popular; MLB 2nd - ESPN

In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent).

#5 is soccer. Behind NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.

No chance anything will ever come close. None. Soccer is the worlds sport. Takes nothing more than a ball and you can play it as kids. Even in the poorest countries.

I'm not making a case for why anyone else should watch it. Fuck those assholes that do that. People enjoy what they enjoy. Still, there is no chance that any american sport ever overtakes it and other world sports like tennis, golf, etc only play out in countries with money.

I agree but to say nobody in America cares about it is stupid. On top of that he post a list of top 10 popular sports in America which Soccer finished 5th in as proof that nobody cares about it :L

I don't think anyone here thought it was more popular than the big 4 sports anyway so 5th is about right

And your point? Who ever said Soccer was the most popular sport here? But to say nobody gives a shit about it here is being ignorant. Trust me if nobody cares about it here it wouldn't be 5th as sports like Nascar & Golf should be ahead of it.

Oh he knows full well that soccer has its fans in this country. His home city has the most rabid MLS fans in the country and he is keenly aware of it. He's just over compensating because of his own disdain for it. Nothing more.

The problem with the broader appeal is we just aren't that good internationally. If they had a few deep runs it would grow. We are totally bandwagon fans when it comes to team USA in just about anything, but becoming good in the worlds more popular sport would for sure raise a lot more attention. Just doubt that will happen any time soon.

And it's a firm #3 here with the popularity of the Sounders. I'm sure it has passed up basketball and hockey as we don't have them here.

It also doesn't help that the World Cup is every 4 years. I think if it was every 2 years people would care about it more here
