I'm surprised how to warm up isn't something they leave to the coaches.

Pregame? I remember when it was against the rules to dunk during a game. In 1967 the NCAA changed to the "no dunk" rule when Lew Alcindor(Kareem Abdul Jabbar) was feared to be too dominant. There was no dunking in a game without penalty until 1976-77.
