This is like the Jim Harbaugh thread on the college boards.

Chuck Norris was only bested by one villain in an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger.

That villain was played by Derek Jeter.

I hope this doesn't happen to Beltre. I think he's a surefire HOFer, but I'm just not sure if he's viewed that way unless he gets these milestones.

I see Beltre as a lock for the HOF. Great offensive player and one of the best defensive 3Bs of his generation as well.

Rolen is a more interesting discussion for the HOF. I think he's just on the outside looking in.

The injuries though have to be taken into account. Chipper had 13 excellent seasons averaging 144 games a year. Brett had a longer prime, but also missed significant time in a lot of those seasons.

I would put him in easily, but I'm just not sure how the voters are going to view him. I think what hurts him (and something I don't care about) is that he never played more than 7 years for one team.

And for some reason, 3rd base has been under represented in the Hall, that's why I feel Rolen has less than a 25% chance of getting in. There have been only 5 HOF 3rd baseman that have gotten in via the BBWAA, which is ridiculous. It took five tries for Eddie Mathews to get in and he hit 500 HRs. And Chipper will get in first ballot, which means 5 of the 6 3rd basemen in the HOF will be 1st ballot. Just shows that for some reason, only the absolute greatest are getting in at that position.

You nailed it though Dirt. If any other player was propped up as the best on those teams, Jeter would be called the underrated player who really led those teams to championships.

Over their careers, Larry only averaged like 3 games more per year.

Brett missed a lot of time in his prime. From 25-32, he only averaged 132 games

Put in Beltre, remove Brett

Of course...All of a sudden we are supposed to believe all the Yankee haters were huge fans of O'Neill and Bernie and Posada, etc.?

Whoever gets propped up the most, will be knocked down the most by the ant-Yankee brigade, Jeter happened to be that guy

You can thank Brett for getting Goose in the Hall

Brett is the reason Goose is in any highlight film

Fuck Goose.....I think he got in cause they just wanted him to shut up...Still whines and complains all the time, the typical "Back in my day" guy

Yeah I'm talking about their primes though, when their production couldn't as easily be replaced. In which case, Jones had a 13 year prime averaging 144 games per year while Brett had a 16 year prime averaging 133. And he missed more than 133 in half those seasons.

Like I said, I would probably take Brett because he did have a longer prime and I think he was slightly better than his peers at that position. But, Chipper also had several good but not great seasons outside his prime while Brett had a few middling seasons.

I thought Pie Traynor got in on his 5th ballot as well?

But, yeah for some reason, 3B doesn't get the love other positions do.

But for Beltre, he might not be first ballot, but one would have to think he gets voted in at some point.

You're right, I missed Traynor. One of the worst HOFers in my opinion so I assumed Veteran's Committee.

That .320 average probably got him. But he rightfully never comes up when discussing the all time greats at 3B.

Rabbit Maranville has my vote for worst HOFer.

Well that's fine too if you're just talking shit. I just like the comp. I think they are both in the top 5 all-time 3rd basemen. And I think the Boggs/Brett/Jones group is a fun debate. I think Schmidt and Mathews are 1 and 2.

Brett hit for a better average than Chipper, and considering the era in which the two played, the gap compared to their peers is even larger for Brett. As far as power, once again taking into account the era in which they played, Brett was better than the average 3rd baseman in the league than Chipper was.

Yea, for Brett's era he was considered a good power hitter.....9x in the top 10 in slugging, including 3x leading the league (Chipper by comparison finished in the top 10 in 5 seasons). He's 6th all-time in doubles and had 7 seasons of 8+ triples.
