DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A horrific multicar crash moments before the end of the Nationwide Series race Saturday at Daytona International Speedway injured 28 fans when Kyle Larson's car flew into the frontstretch catch fencing, shearing off the front half of the car and leaving large pieces of the vehicle inside the fencing.

Speedway president Joie Chitwood said 14 of the injured spectators were transported off-property for medical attention and 14 were treated on site.

One adult is in surgery with life-threatening head trauma, and a 14-year-old is in critical, but not life-threatening condition, Halifax Medical Center representative Byron Cogdell told ESPN.

At least one tire from Larson's car flew into the seating area at Daytona. Police officers and NASCAR safety officials quickly ran to the location where part of the car went through the fencing, destroying one section of the catch fence.

Initial photos showed several people being placed on stretchers in the grandstands. One woman's leg was bleeding as she was carried away.

Larson climbed out of what was left of his car. He was not hurt.

Horrific wreck mars end of Daytona N'wide race - ESPN

Here is video of the guy next to the person hit with that tire that flies into the stands. Can't see the impact, but you can see the tire sitting in the seat next to the person that everyone is calling for help for.

Damn

Haven't heard anything about the cameraman down front. He's right behind the fence with his back to the cars coming out of turn 4. He's right at the point of impact.

pretty despicable that NASCAR is trying to 'copyright police' the user vids off of the internet. they don't seem to care about the 230498092384 other user vids that abound.
good on google for telling them to FO (at least for now)

full blown panic mode.

feel bad for those injured.

Yeah - we're not always the brightest bunch; are we? :D

Seriously; despite all of the legal disclaimers on the back of the tickets, who really thinks about these rare & freak incidents happening to them? I've sat just as close to the track as those folks were at Kansas for a NASCAR truck race, & have been not eight feet from the 'Thunder Valley' section of Mid-Ohio with only one skimpy, un-reniforced catch-fence and a secondary, farmer's field style fence between me & cars flying by.

I thought he was saying "where's my kid?" I'll have to watch it again.
