Darryl Sutter Wants To Get Rid Of Penalty Boxes

After his team’s practice on Wednesday, Sutter questioned the need for penalty boxes, and he made a compelling case.

“Still, it amazes me that’s what they call it – the penalty box. Like, what is that, the ‘penalty box?’ They should take the penalty box out, because you think about how much time there actually is sitting in the penalty box now, it’s about 12 minutes total a game, right? 12 minutes,” Sutter said, per Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider.

“They should sell those seats…there are so few penalties now. Why don’t they just say, ‘OK, you’ve got to sit on the bench,’ or, ‘You’ve got to sit on their bench for two minutes.’ I don’t get that. They’ve got like four guys sitting over there, and room for like six other people to sit. They’re the best seats in the house, right at center ice. Like, if it was a football game, then that’s the best seat.”

The spot that really doesn't make sense isn't the penalty boxes, it's the "goal judge". In a league where every goal is reviewed by video anyway, what purpose does the goal judge serve? Some old guy gets a front row seat so that he can press a button and flash a red light that means absolutely nothing.

I read it as he was a 16 year old girl especially at the end. Not just because of the use of "like" either.

None? I haven't looked lately but as of a few years ago I'm pretty sure there were a handful of rinks that still had a guy back there. Maybe they finally put them all out to pasture.

At Verizon Center they sit up on the concourse area, about 30 rows up. A buddy of mine has season tickets near him and pointed him out to me. It is a bit ridiculous, but the guy gets paid to go to all the games, so who am I to judge?

straw poll ... seats in first row ... yay or nay ... Im nay ... good for a couple times to see the speed and force but as a sth ... why ???

Seats in the first row aren't as bad as they used to be now that most if not all arenas have gotten rid of the seamless glass - you can at least hear some of the chirping/sounds on the ice.

Personally, I'm all about the club level suites if I had my choice, although the nosebleeds aren't a bad alternative in most arenas.
