Braves have dodged two massive bullets on the closer front. They didn't sign Craig Kimbrel when the entire fanbase was screaming for them too, and the Pirates were asking way too much for their pedo closer.

Mark Melancon might not be Mariano Rivera, but he's been getting the job done.

But I think a lot of people, including me were very wrong about who would be the better pickup, Keuchel or Kimbrel.

Keuchel is probably gonna be the game one starter for the Braves in the NLDS, and Kimbrel has fallen off the map. The Cubs giving big contracts to former Braves is gonna lead to their ultimate downfall, and that makes me happy.

For all the bitching about DD's inactivity in the offseason and midseason, I'm glad we stayed away from that one. He did not look good in the second half or postseason last year. That being said, it probably doesn't help that he didn't have a spring training.

I was among the Braves fan railing AA for not getting Kimbrel. Not having a spring training probably hurt, I'm thinking that's why Folty had such a rough start to the season as well, but Keuchel has been fine after his first few starts, and you'd think not having a spring training would effect a starter more than a reliever.

The problem ended up being the rotation. Not the bullpen.

Kimbrel really hasn’t been the same guy since he left Atlanta(except for 2017).

He was having a fantastic season in 2018 until the second half when he started walking everyone. He went from a 62/16 K/BB ratio in 40.2 first half innings to 34/15 in 21.2 second half innings. 1.77 ERA in the first half, 4.57 in the second.
He was just shaky in 2016.

agreed. and the rotation wore out the bullpen

Yup. This bullpen was probably actually a great job by DD.

But the rotation ran it into the ground.

Yeah, Kimbrel's been yikes as of late. Quite a downturn for a guy that was at 1 point the best closer in baseball.

Yeah. Sale and Price's seasons haven't been that bad (110 and 114 ERA+s respectively), but Price has averaged a hair under 5 IP per start and Sale gave up 4+ runs in 13 of his 25 starts. Porcello just flat out sucked and there was zero stability whatsoever among their #5 starters with Eovaldi hurt/sucking and the replacements being god awful.

Dallas Keuchel has been a 2.0 WAR pitcher since he came up in June.

Kimbrel came up about the same time for the Cubs, he has a -0.5 WAR.

Sometimes, it's the move you don't make.
