In the Omaha World Herald they are asking people to send in their ideas for trophies in the Big 10 for Nebraska rivalries. So far about 1,000 people have said Iowa and Nebraska should play for a Golden Corncob...........seriously? Is that all the better we can do? That is like the most obvious simple idea possible

Well I think there is some meaning behiind that bell though which ties Nebraska and Missouri together.....I think they want to come up with an idea that ties Nebraska and Iowa together from some time in the past.

They should have made that bridge go straight over to the casinos, since Nebraska is too good to have any casinos of their own, 50,000 Omahans drive over to Council Bluffs a day to gamble.

50,000 that seems a little high. I mean a lot do it but 50,000 I hope that is an exaggeration and not based on fact.

Wasn't iowa the cornhuskers back when we were the bugeaters? Iowa hated the name, so we kinda stole it from them...

Well it cannot be a pig cause MN already has that with Iowa.
Mn also has an Axe with Wisconsin and Lil Brown Jug wit Michigan. I know they have those and I think the schools are right that mn plays.

Why do we have to break from tradition that winning the game is what we are playing for and the trinkets mean nothing we want the Conf and the NC.

I asked this question a couple years ago on the other site and they told me Neb. plays to play and to win the NC these things to try to force a rivalry mean nothing. A true rivalry just has a spark that makes it happen.

Right now In MN I do not think the trophies mean what they used to. And lets face it when we played OU every year that was a special game. I think it will be hard to develop what we had with them or Mizzou even CU.

The "trinkets" are actually tokens used to symbolize a certain accomplishment, much like the Grey Cup, the NC trophy, or any other trophy. You talk of NU tradition like you know anything about it. I've read your posts on the other site, yesterday you learned that Bugeaters was our nickname at one time. You also learned that the school colors aren't red and white they are (and have been) scarlet and cream. FYI I'm pretty sure our first name was the Gold Knights.

Do you think our rivalry with OU happened overnight?? Are you silly enough to believe that every NU/OU game was a nail biter. We already have a bit of history with Iowa and MN. I bet we eventually find that special feeling or "spark" with at least a couple schools in the Big Ten but it won't happen overnight, hell it might even take fifty years.

By the way...the trophies in MN don't mean what they used to because MN sucks (right now anyways).

FYI I'm pretty sure our first name was the Gold Knights.

It was actually the "Old Gold Knights", and existed as a nickname only, around the same time they were simply called "Nebraskans". This very well have been their first nickname, but the jury is out on "Nebraskans" being their first nickname. Official team names weren't really there until 1900 or so, but NU had several nicknames:

- Bugeaters
- Tree Planters
- Nebraskans
- The Rattlesnake Boys
- Antelopes
- Old Gold Knights
- Cornhuskers

There may be even more - it seems most of these nicknames were conjured by sportswriters of the time looking for a catchy headline when reporting the news.

Cornhuskers was indeed taken from Iowa, which was never an official team name of theirs but was one of their own many nicknames.

I've known about several of these most of my life, but never knew exact dates of what they were called when and in what order. I don't really give a shit either, but for those who need to suggestively poke at others because a fan didn't know about the "bugeaters", then here's some more material for you to feel better about yourself.

I have actually thought about this before...and I think a mock up trophy, resembling the national championship trophy, between Nebraska and Michigan...personally...since it's my idea...I love it.

Another idea...add Penn State, and make it a 3 team trophy, similar to the Beehive trophy for Utah teams. Penn State went 12-0 in 1994, while NU got the trophy...as they did over Michigan in 1997. Another EPIC idea IMO :)

Look Stray I brought up this on the other site a couple years ago and the Neb fans said no they didn't play for the little trophies like this. That is where my comment comes from. 2) I believe that there are way too many bowl games and the trinkets as you say that diminish what is really happening. Now a days almost everyone gets a trophy for just showing up.
NO I do not think the OU NU rivalry happened over night, maybe you do and do not understand how things develop in sports. You want to bash me I tell you to sit on your trophy cause its the only thing you got in life and all you had to do is pay a fee and show up and you got it.

Develop the rivalry the right way by making the games mean something on the National level. My view is NU/OU developed into what it was because of what the game ended up meaning on the national level, which was being in the NC talk or not being in it that year. A trinket for 5 or six games a year is a joke. MN has Cosgrove as their DC you could beat them sitting on your hands, what is the purpose in carrying that worthless piece of whatever it might be every year. MN hasn't had a D in over twenty years, except of ONE year and then that coach got recruited away from MN. Illinois again why cart something around for a team like that. Iowa is an up and down team from year to year. Mich is not what it use to be. So you have Penn St and Ohio St and what are the chances if they have an east/west or north/south division of the B10 once we get there that we will have either of those schools in our part of the conf.? I think about 0 cause of geography. So we will get to play schools that for the most part either lose to Division II schools or have a lot of trouble beating those D II schools. I think Iowa will not be as strong as Mizzou is and they will probably be the strongest comp. we will face in our side of the conf for awhile.
You may not like what I have said or agree with or believe what I have said. To that I say so what. I have done a lot and that is that. I grew up in a military family and we moved a lot also, had two CC coaches ask my dad if I could stay and run for them when it came time to move cause of a reassignment, all in my soph year and dad said no. My best guess is you are jealous. Sports is what I did to the determent of a lot of people wanting to workout. When you live in certain areas or get to certain levels its hard to get much better cause you have to travel too far to train with the people at your level. You either beat up on people that are too far below your level or you happen to be able to workout with people that are competing at the upper levels in the nation or the world and its hard to improve. So I did a lot and have helped kids make it to the same levels of comp or better that I attained in five sports and did things a lot to help the kids I was coaching. So stay go hang out with your strays and keep the fleas amongst your group.
