Syracuse still has some work to do to convince the computers they are leading the nation.

I would imagine with games @ Duke, Pitt and Virginia...with Clemson and NC State thrown in for good measure ought to make or break the boys.

Computers still loving Kansas. That team could lose by 20 to Baylor, get "stunned" by WVU on Saturday, and still pull an index rating of 10 or better on Sunday...

This means the 3 most OVERRATED teams are Cincinnati, San Diego State and St Louis. 3 most underrated are UCLA, Wisconsin and Ohio State ( at least according to computer ranking vs human polls )

Interesting stuff. People always talk about how humans can see things computers can't, which is certainly true... but the opposite is also true.

No human can come close to processing every second of every game played in the entire country. But computers can.

Perhaps there's a middle ground, but I like the human polls better when referencing those six teams.

Average in the poll rankings?

Ultimately though I think the human polls will carry more weight but the computers are a great reference for the selection committee:

Among the resources available to the committee are complete box scores, game summaries and notes, pertinent information submitted on a team's behalf by its conference, various computer rankings, injury reports, head-to-head results, chronological results, Division I results, non-conference results, home, away and neutral results, rankings, polls and the NABC regional advisory committee rankings.

This is the ironic thing.

based on these computer rankings the teams you mentioned are the most "underrated" but just off of watching the games I think those 3 are actually among the most overrated teams in the nation.

I think you could even argue that Cincy and St Louis are underrated as well even though these polls imply the opposite.

Hey no argument from me there. I think inherently we are prone to value teams that are playing well recently even if its against competition that is less than stellar ( ie SDSU and SLU ) while we tend to jump off the bandwagon of teams that lose 3 or 4 of 5 or whatever even if they have played really solid competition ( take a team like Iowa State that lost to Oklahoma, TExas and Kansas 2 of those on the road and fell 10 spots in the polls as an example ).

I would say Texas is a leader in underrated. From 15th (which many think is still too low), to unranked. Meanwhile the team that we just beat, and have a better record than - is ranked 3rd.

Actually for the premise of this thread that would mean Texas is overrated by 12.... But I do agree more with the humans on Texas than I do with the humans on most other teams. I wouldnt have Texas 15th but they certainly are a top 18/19/20 type team IMO.

I kind of like what you did this last time where its just the computer composite, but then next to each team you can see how it differs from the human rankings

Yea, why not. The polls give us some human insight.

I vote no. I've voiced my reasoning previously and won't rehash it all again here, but understand I'll almost certainly be in the minority on that, so carry on gents.

I like the polls, as long as it furthers my team looking good. Once that doesn't happen to my team's advantage, then please discontinue the polls. Once my team is at the ranking where I want them, then--and only then--may you reinstitute the polls into your data.

Thank you,

John 01992
