Butch Davis is poised to return to college coaching next season at Florida International, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

Though the school is unlikely to announce a deal in the near future, FIU is not conducting any coaching search activities at the moment and has zeroed in on Davis, a longtime friend of athletics director Pete Garcia.

The choice is up to Davis at this point whether to accept the job, according to the people with knowledge.

Davis, 64, has been trying to land a college coaching job the last few years after his North Carolina tenure ended under the cloud of an NCAA investigation into players receiving improper benefits from agents. He was fired in 2011.

Davis also coached the Cleveland Browns and resurrected the Miami Hurricanes as a national power.

Florida International fired Ron Turner on Sept. 25 after the team fell to 0-4 this season."

He's going to have to be more careful in the way he cheats than he was at UNC. FIU hardly has the NCAA in their back pocket in the way he's accustom.

Yeah remember all them players getting the boot for accepting the gifts.

Its not fair to the players. These guys are young and many come from poor families and what do you expect them to do...turn down a gift ?

What if you always wanted that vehicle ? Suddenly the keys are handed over...

What would you do ?

Both of Florida's CUSA teams like to give washed-up coaches another shot.

It makes perfect sense for certain players. If you have no allegiance to your school, don't value your education, and you've been in college for two years then those athletes have no reason at all not to accept gifts. It doesn't hurt them at all.

The money isn't being taken away from them, the cars and jewelry aren't being taken away, tattoos aren't being erased, etc. They have nothing to lose if they don't value education and are in school strictly for the NFL. For selfish athletes it makes complete sense. They're never going to be penalized.
