Obviously bullpen use is up in recent years, as jobs continue to get more specialized. And really, the numbers suggest that the fewer times guys see the lineup, the more effective they'll be. But on the other side, born out of this idea of saving guy's arms, most managers won't even get a guy warm until it looks like their current pitcher (starter, reliever, whatever) is in trouble.

Why? I can see maybe not having them ramp up their throwing to full readiness, but why not have guys stretching and starting some light tossing in the fifth so they take less time to get ready? After a starter gets to the seventh, why not just have a reliever ready to go? Why not two in case the first guy doesn't have it? Especially in a close game or a really high scoring game when anything could happen?

It just seems like unnecessary caution with your bullpen arms and unnecessary risk with the current score to me.
