So many issues to discuss here concerning the head coach. My first question, how do you not kick an extra point and go up by 12 and force the opposition to score two touchdowns to beat you. Seems like a child could have did the simple arithmetic. 6+2+3 =11 which = a fucking tie game. How does a seasoned head coach look at some chart and not make it a 12 point game.

More to come, this is just my first contention.

There was 10:34 left in the game when the Irish went for two. Did he really think it would come down to three more scores by Northwester, two field goals and a touchdown and his two point conversion would make the three scores a tie? Is this logical thinking at any level?

I think Fitz is a better coach than Kelly. But Fitz has also made it known that he does not like Notre Dame.

I wonder how much of that dislike will disappear if we were to offer him a job?

Purguy I'm not saying I agree with Fitzgerald going for two but if they convert the game was over and they win, that is far different than what Kelly pulled. It was a bad effort top to bottom and Kelly was out coached two weeks in a row.

I'm not ready to give up on Brian Kelly but he has to start showing me much more. I don't judge it by wins, I judge it by discipline, development and improvement. It should start by benching Golson and accepting that Zaire will make some mistakes. Golson has been given a season full of chances, I was really pulling for the kid but it's time to pull the plug on him.

I have always thought Gary Patterson of TCU as my dream coach. I doubt we could ever get him but I think he's one of the best. He's won with defense, he's won with offense, he's won low scoring games and now he's won lighting up the scoreboard. He's recruited a unbelievably talent quarterback in Trevone Boykin. Just passing thoughts, I know they're not very realistic.

I'll believe in Kelly more when I start to see him adapt to the talent and make the appropriate changes. Run the ball more and not be afraid to jerk your starting qb. Find a way to fix a gushing defense.

Something about coaches who like to be the OC ( we have one at SC) . They are usually arrogant and stubborn .So it's gonna be interesting if he takes a look in the mirror and changes some things that a lot of people see as a problem. Kellys done it his way and it's usually worked well for him but he's at the highest level and the little things are magnified.

Wow! I actually agree with something SloGal has said! Ohhhh, the humanity! :tea:
Been saying this since Kelly got here ... has a stubborn and narcissistic streak, coupled with a know-it-all ego. Recipe for disaster if you're not successful ... and where are the Irish at 4+ years later?

Only positive about Kelly is he took us to a NCG. No other coach has done that in a long time at ND. So he gets credit for that.

He's brought in better athletes as well he should get some credit for that but they need to start producing, shooting themselves in the foot has been the most difficult thing to watch.

Problem is, there is nobody on staff who can really challenge Kelly. When he wasn't the OC, he had a "yes man" coach, Martin was one of his long standing compatriots.

Heistand is not only the OL, but the running coordinator, but in Kelly's scheme does it really matter? We are running into the same problem we had with Weis, and that is all the time is devoted to scheme, and not fundamentals. His highly complex passing game eats up most of the available practice time. Remember how much praise our OL got last year? They were great in pass blocking, buth they weren't much better at running than they are now. This offense needs balance.

Defensively, there has not just been a lot of bad injuries, but sloppy regression. We were agressive and hitting and tackling well earlier this year. Not so much now. The play that burns in my mind was the 2pt conversion after the penalty on Tranquil. We stood up the runner at the two, he plowed our DL into the endzone to score. Jarron Jones has been playing much higher, he's not getting leverage.

A lot of regression, and very few, if any core compentencies.

And don't get me started on the special teams regression. There was promise at the beginning of the year. Just seems like its no longer a priority. We can't even get a holder to workout for crying out loud.

Fitz was an all American at northwestern, and was the star linebacker when they beat us back in 1995. He's a God there when it comes to football. I don't see any way he would give that up to be next in a long line of coaches at ND. First time he loses two in a row, people would be calling for his job. He has better job security now than he would ever have at ND, so I don't see him leaving Northwestern.
