Auburn names Boise State's Harsin as new coach

Bryan Harsin, who was 69-19 with three Mountain West titles in seven seasons at Boise State, replaces Gus Malzahn, who was fired earlier this month after eight seasons at Auburn.

Harsin was 68-18 @ Boise. He's from outside the region, so will have to build a contact network. Auburn recruiting (Rivals, National/SEC) under Gus:

I’m happy for him. Know the dude well, played football against him growing up in Boise since we were kids. Gotta say I’m a bit surprised by the hire. Good coach? Sure. Big boy SEC contending type good? Not even close. Best of luck to him though. I certainly hope it works out and wish him all the best.

It is hard to complain about 10 wins. But he is a very frustrating coach.

On one hand, he was more successful against Saban than any other SEC coach over the last 8 seasons (6 of which have seen Bama in the CFP). On the other, UGA had his number pretty well. Outside of those rivals, he’s lost some big time head-scratchers (14 TAMU, 17 LSU, 18 UT, and 20 SCar).

His recruiting has been great, with the caveat that his 2 biggest rivals take in top 5 classes each year and two other West teams (LSU and TAMU) usually are at least top 10. Adding in the coaching upgrades at OM and MSU and the West should be pretty brutal over the next few years.

I laughed at this assessment....Auburn has had more coaches turn them down than the CDC allows to be in a room

Auburn wanted a hire out of the box, they got it.

Harsin wanted more money and more control, he got it.

The only OM coach that had recruiting results comparable to Auburn’s in the last 50 years got them on probation.

That said, Hardin hardly has great recruiting roots in the areas in which Auburn tends to mine their talent. Hiring the right staff is a huge key for him.

Yes, if Kiffin moved to Auburn he’d be swapping his cross division rival from Vandy to Georgia.
