Are there any old school country music fans here?

We have a new guy on our crew at work and we were talking about music last week and as much as he loves country music, he hasn't heard of a bunch of the old classics. He's 21 or so and only knows current tunes. So I told him that I'd put together a list of tunes that he needs to check out.

Looking for suggestions.

Here's where I'm starting:

Chiseled in Stone - Vern Gosdin
If We Make it through December - Merle
Blues Man - Hank Jr.
Sugar Daddy - The Bellamy Brothers
Long Black Veil - Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash & Willie. See if he’s heard the Johnny Cash cover of “Hurt” by NIN. Sometimes the young bucks can relate more to Johnny after they’ve heard that version. I like the old school country the best. Today’s stuff is mostly soft pop crap.

Good idea on the Cash cover and I hear ya on the new stuff. I don't listen to it. It's awful country music and only decent pop music. And don't even get me started on the hick-hop shit.

I'm No Stranger to the Rain- Keith Whitley
Sunday Mornin Comin Down- Kristofferson
Lonesome, On'ry and Mean- Waylon
Branded Man- Merle
Time of the Preacher- Willie
What's Your Mama's Name- Tanya Tucker
Rose Colored Glasses- John Conlee

I'd definitely start off with Waylon though, anybody that doesn't like Waylon isn't worthy of your friendship or guidance.

Waylon is the best there's ever been and the best there ever will be, and that covers all genres of music.

I know he's more recent, but I love George Strait. "Amarillo by Morning" and "You Look So Good In Love" are two of my favorites. "Crazy" by Patsy Cline is a solid classic.

For modern country that doesn't sound like it should be on MTV, try RadioFreeTexas.com. I used to listen to it when I had a desk job.
