Interesting that Amy G didn’t mention how Sammy did in his rehab start last night. I wonder why...

 :noidea:
Bochy has been quoted as saying, "For now, the lean is to give him one more start". Samardzija threw 40 pitches in that first inning last night. Sounds like he won't be ready quite yet.

But his historical trend is also to hit MUCH better as the season progresses.

Yes, his GIDP this year is up. Yes, he has a history of hitting into GIDP. No, I am not concerned about it yet.
Historically, his best months are June and July. He starts to trend downward in August and September (but not to April levels). I'm not concerned, I was merely pointing out that his GIDP prediction is higher than the numbers you gave. Players can still be productive while grounding into double plays a lot.

You all probably know this already, but I just learned that Bum's first strikeout of the game was the 1,500th of his career.

I only knew because I got an email from the Giants telling me so.

I have connections...

Eno brings up a good point here. The Giants are probably the last team in baseball that would attempt something like this, but it would be interesting if they did.

Instead of sending down Rodriguez and Suarez, send down Johnson and DFA Gearrin. Cueto, Bum and Shark are your regular starters, then piggy back Holland and Stratton with Suarez and Rodriguez, respectively.

Let Holland and Stratton go all-out for 4-5 innings, then have Suarez and Rodriguez go all-out for 3-4 innings.

You'd still have 6 guys in the Pen, including a long man in Blach.

My hunch was accurate

Bum came out unscathed but that was a rough inning. He went from projecting out to a full 9 to maybe 7 innings.

At a training conference in Chicago (actually St Charles)...just got back from dinner and have been watching for an inning or so. I very much approve. Bum really looked shaky pitching out of the stretch in the 5th...not surprising.

Going to see the Kane County Cougars tomorrow night (Dbags A team). Should be fun.

Take a hike, StoryMEAT.

Another @tzill approved pitchers duel

Came across this today by a political guy who writes about baseball from time to time. Amazing stuff.

On June 26, 1968, in the first game of a doubleheader in St. Louis, Bob Gibson shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates on four hits. St. Louis won 3-0. Gibson contributed to the Cardinals’ offense with a double and a walk in three plate appearances.

This was Gibson’s fifth consecutive shutout. Here are Gibson’s numbers in the five games:

June 6 at Houston: 9 innings, no runs, three hits and two walks allowed, five strikeouts
June 11 at Atlanta: 9 innings, no runs, five hits and two walks allowed, four strikeouts
June 15 vs. Cincy: 9 innings, no runs, four hits and no walks allowed, 13 strikeouts
June 20 vs. Cubs: 9 innings, no runs, five hits and one walk allowed, six strikeouts
June 26 vs. Pitt: 9 innings, no runs, four hits and no walks allowed, seven strikeouts

In his next game, against the Dodgers, Gibson would finally allow a run. Just one, in nine innings.

Then, he would pitch three shutouts in his next four games.

His totals for this stretch of ten games were:

90 innings, two runs allowed on 51 hits, with 12 walks and 74 strikeouts.

Gibson won all ten of these starts on his way to a 12 game winning streak. He finished the season with a 1.12 ERA and a record of 22-9.

How could Gibson have lost so many games pitching to such a low ERA. Because 1968 was “the year of the pitcher,” and Gibson didn’t get much run support. He lost three games in which he allowed just one earned run; three games in which he allowed just two; and three games in which he allowed three. Those were his nine losses.

Even taking into account the dominance of pitchers in 1968, Gibson’s season is still astonishing. Only one other National League starting pitcher managed an ERA of under 2.00 that season. San Francisco’s Bob Bolin came in at 1.99. Bolin pitched only 177 innings as a starter and reliever. Gibson pitched 305 innings.
