The truth is they don't care how he does as long as he shows up and pitches every few days. The guys in the booth just wanted someone they could call "Wheels" again and this ownership is so loaded they can pay 118 mil to make it happen.

Don't know if Wheeler was/is the sole focus of improving the bullpen and getting some help for Arrieta? Was the FO even in the talks to get Gerrit Cole or did they just by-pass Cole and go right to Wheeler? Hamels was the sentimental favs and he'll add to the already stout Atlanta bullpen. We are on the other end of having barely anyone so Wheeler is an improvement. How much of an improvement remains to be determined.

Folks may not agree with how Fangraphs estimates value for a player, but they have a decent track record.

Hamels expected to get $15M, he got $18M. 20% increase.
Wheeler expected to get $18M, he got $23.6M. 31.1% increase.
Moustakas expected to get $12M, he got $16M. 33.3% increase.

Let's see what the top tier pitchers get now.

When you look at the list, a majority of the contracts are going for more than anticipated.
There is a lot of money to be spent out there, especially with the Reds and White Sox getting involved.

I think that a part of increased spending is tied to the coming labor negotiations. If the union went in with 2-3 straight years of a tight free agency market, they might be more inclined to dig their heels in and give less to ownership.

If the money is flowing slightly more free than before, maybe it softens the resolve of the union.

The final costs are always laid upon the fans backs. Imagine what it will cost to go to a game in 10 years. Ugh

If only you didn't have to go to the games....
Yeah it would be great if we were at a point that virtually everyone could afford to have a 55 inch tv to watch the games in the comfort of their living room.

Oh wait..........

I'm old enough to remember when games might be blacked out because the stadium wasn't full.

Good times.....

in baseball? I don't remember that. If that was true today the Marlins would never be on tv

I really meant Nola instead if Arrieta.
you weren't wrong though. Arrieta also needs help. Like some sort of pitching coach or shaman or therapist to teach him to stop serving up gopher balls to every left handed batter that comes to the plate.

Sorry, football.

My bad.

Though I do remember those games on PRISM with the late, great Jim Barniak...

but he's coming into the season healthy for real this time. until he doesn't perform well, then he'll reveal he's been hurt the entire time.

I don't remember Barniak. I do remember as a kid the NBA was losing popularity and they actually had to show the NBA championship games on a tape delay at 1130 PM after the news. I was planning to sneak downstairs and watch the Sixers beat the Lakers in the finals one year. Then somehow before 1130 I accidentally heard they lost (I think Kareem was injured and Magic started at center and just took over the game) so I didn't bother. Good times.....

The pitching is set. They have around 18 million bucks left to spend. Maybe an infielder?

i see a lot about his upside Why Zack Wheeler could be the next Gerrit Cole

just wish i had more faith in someone coming to the phillies and actually improving. tends to be the other way around.

Well, We do have a new manager, with new staff. I have much more confidence in Joe and the staff he is bringing in vs our previous manager.

I also think the top 2 pitching free agents will command a very steep price.

the top 2 are in a tier of the own. after that i think there's a lot of pitchers in the same boat, wheeler included.

Yeah, Cole is getting $30M+. Strasburg maybe $28M+.

Then it's basically Ryu and Bumgarner.
I expect them to get $20-23M per year.

There are teams out there with money to spend, so in this case, maybe striking early helps raise the bar for those other teams as talent dries up.

Maybe take a flier on a Roark or Porcello to shore up the rotation.

I was just thinking the other day how there is a bit of a hot stove again this year. Wondering why. This makes total sense.
