I was inspired to start this thread: Are the Dodgers paying $500k for playoff flexibility? | SportsHoopla Sports Forums by this article: Bronson Arroyo adds to Dodgers postseason roster flexibility - True Blue LA
And then, as I was writing it, I decided it'd be a fun thread to get going on a Dodgers off-day. So, here's your thread for arguing about who the Dodgers bring to the playoffs (assuming that happens). For you lazy people who don't want to read that article or my post on this topic in the MLB Forum, the short-end of it is that Arroyo was only added to give the Dodgers the ability to add three organizational players who were not on the 40-man on August 31 (which is the normal cut-off date).
To kick things off, I'd like to follow the train of thought from the article and talk about the farfetched long-shots who would surely be interesting to see, but likely nothing more than small contributors:
From the above article, the author suggested:
Julio Urias - Blue-Chip pitching prospect who intentionally missed the middle of the season to have cosmetic surgery on his left eye. There's a theory that this was timed in order to keep his workload lower and allow him to be more available in September/October.
Jose De Leon - This summer, he was often the first prospect suggested as trade bait behind Seager/Urias. Another stud pitcher who has been on the DL since July 16 - also conveniently keeping his pitch-count down.
Robbie Garvey - Who? A track star in AA who is technically an outfielder but almost exclusively used as a pinch runner. Personally, it's my favorite idea that he brought up. The Playoffs are a weird time and to have a gazelle on your bench for the sake of having a gazelle on your bench would be insane and awesome and an absolutely fantastic story.
And then, for fun, I've started to come up with some ideas of my own:
Erisbel Arruebarrena - Kicked off the 40-man and suspended for the season by the team (I gather that he's a pain in the ass). Suspension was successful appealed, he's back with the organization, and he's apparently being less of a problem. He's considered to be an elite glove at shortstop. Could be a defensive replacement for Jimmy Rollins.
Corey Seager - Do I need to explain this one? He's been essentially penciled in as the Dodgers' 2016 starting shortstop, so he'll need to be added to the 40-man anyways. He's also been seemingly destined for a September cup-of-coffee all year as well. This allows the team to wait until the last second to add him in mid-September and then still retain the option of using him in the playoffs.
I had this guy pegged as an option, too...
Jose Peraza - The Braves former #1 prospect who came in the Arroyo trade. He's consider to be a plus-plus defender at 2B and a plus defender at SS. He also has a speed/baserunnung/hitting profile similar to Dee Gordon (with slightly more pop). He'd bring the speed-on-the-basepaths ability of Robbie Garvey, the defensive replacement potential of EA, and none of the negative dumbassery associated with EA.
... but then I realized that he's already on the 40-man roster, so the Dodgers don't need to use the "replace an injured player" exception on him if they want him on the playoffs.
Feel free to ignore the topic of "replace and injured guy" and speculate on the playoff rotation, etc. or whatever you want. It's a rosterbation thread, so this is just for fun.
