Cole was upset by a call but Garrett got his share of bad calls to.

Cole needed to let the ump do the umpiring. His job is to pitch.

Every player and manager expects the umpire to be consistent.... Consistently calling it their way that is.

Cole can blame the umpire, but the Pirates only need to look into the mirror to see why they loss that game.

In the 6th inning Hamilton reaches on a error and Votto walks after Cole doesn't get the call he wanted. Duvall hits the HR and the Reds have 3 runs on 1 hit.

The 10th inning has Barnhart walking and pinch runner Alcantara moving into scoring position on a E9. Hamilton hits a 180 ft. double and that's the end of the story.

Amir Garrett does something that most of the Reds' young pitchers haven't figured out. He rarely over throws focusing on location and keeping the ball down.

Earl Weaver once said "Momentum is only as good as tomorrow's starting pitcher".

Scott Feldman was the epitome of that statement tonight.

Feldman has the ability to hobble through 3 innings. Sorry, but I don't see an upside to a guy who can't even get the opposing pitcher out.

I think Earl Weaver might have had a different philosophy if he had a rotation of Scott Feldman, Bronson Arroyo, Rookie Davis, and Tim Adleman. For starters he'd needed two 3-run homers to play .500 ball.

The Reds rotation and a playoff contenders are apples and oranges by comparison......
with a whole lotta lemons mixed in.

If Earl Weaver had this pitching staff. We wouldn't even know who he was. And the Reds would have played someone else in the 1970 World Series, We wouldn't have seen Brooks Robinson take all those extra base hits away from the Reds. Maybe we would have won that WS too.

The rain has let up and they're playing ball.

Cody Reed has punched his ticket to Louisville and Austin Brice has been called up.

Reed and Stephenson are considered the top two pitching prospects in the organization. Stephenson just had 7 days between outings and Reed 6 days. There's no routine to what they're doing. I fail to understand how that strategy has benefitted the team or them.

This pitching staff is like a jigsaw puzzle with a few missing pieces. I can't fathom any SP on this team having 200+ innings, or how they can fit 7-8 of them to get 150. It's good the bullpen has exceeded expectations, because it seems the Reds don't have a single pitcher in the rotation with even odds of making it 6 innings. Not sure how long a bullpen can go tossing as many innings as they have, though...no surprise, Reds P do have a lot of success when opposing hitters swing at pitches out of the zone, unfortunately not so much when they don't. With only a 1 game exception, Garrett has been a rare SP that consistently threw enough strikes to be impressive. I do fear the opposition's advance scouting report in a few weeks making the Reds younger arms have to resort to less predictable 2nd and 3rd pitches...when they have so much trouble locating their best pitches.

It appears the Pirates just can't solve the Reds, but the Brewers can, and the Reds already won a series in St. Louis, so it's been an odd start in that regard. It seems to be a perennial theme to "wait until the rotation gets off the DL", but I'm neither optimistic about that going as planned, or confident that the re-assignment of pitchers will improve the team, if Bailey and Desclafani DO get back, and stay in, the rotation.

It's nice to see Votto hitting his weight before at A-S break, DuVall has done well, and Suarez is hitting like he may go oh-for-some month soon to make up for looking like Ted Williams so far. Would be nice to have Hamilton and Peraza above the Mendoza line, because this team is going to have a tough time if they combo for .220 BA and 1200 PA, no matter how many bases they steal.

In baseball,, you just never know until you play the games, and I'm pleasantly surprised the Reds are within a win of .500 after 28 of them. We'll have to see how the next 134 go.

There seems to be some lineup churn, which is always nice. I think Mesoraco is going to step up pretty soon and get 20-some PA a week, which adds another extra base hit dimension.

All in all, the Reds still have to depend on Blake Wood and eventually again, Cingrani.

Reed is going to need a lot of time in the minors to learn how to pitch so that he doesn't tip off his fastball, which he's flinging toward the catcher's area code.

I'm thinking Reed went down instead of Stephenson. Is because this is Stephenson's last chance with the Reds to show he can pitch in the majors. I'm thinking he will be a bust before he is a solid major leaguer. At least as a Red. Not saying they let him go and he hooks up with another team he won't figure it out.

I think this is a brain-buster for the Reds. A year ago, they said Reed had nothing more to prove in the minors. Obviously he hasn't proven he can get anybody out there yet either.
Stephenson is probably closer to a finished product but he needs big-league innings to sharpen his game.
Reed is just mechanically a mess.

We see evidence of what an offense can yield when the top 3 guys in the order are consistently on base.
It can even let mediocre pitching off the hook.
Austin Brice is an interesting addition to the staff. I think he will be serviceable but often beatable.

Bronson will be the Straily of the staff and become the de-facto ace.
Finny is out for at least a month.
Disco is out for the year.
I frankly don't g.a.f. about Homer.
Garrett needs another year to be any good.
Adleman will be there when they need a game pitched.
Not sure how many games that will include after May 1.
The bullpen will run out of gas.
Meanwhile, Kivlehan ....

I just don't understand this. He have given up more than 2 runs only once and pitched less than 6 innings only once.

Again Garrett has only went short of 6 innings one time. Seems pretty consistent in that regard.

I just wish, that He and the rest of the staff could keep their pitch count down and instead of going 5-6 innings they would go 7-9. But you are right Tubbs, Garrett has done well so far
. I wish some of the other young pitchers can start doing better. I was pleased with Stephenson last night He pitched well for the 1st time in a long while. Davis made it 5 innings his last start.
I'm really disappointed in Reed, I thought this would be his breakout year.
