He's a Cub. I grew up with him. He played the game the right way. He hit for average. He hit for power. He was clutch. His defense was otherworldly.

Because for 7 seasons, the Red Sox were a 108-win team when Pedro was on the mound. Because we've never seen anything like his 1999 season.

For a shining period, probably the best righthander in all the land.

Not my favorite all-time player (wrote that at the top) but easily my favorite as a hitter. Just did it without annoying people. Closest we may ever see to hitting .400.

Cool. Captain Obvious
So, if you don't want to participate, nobody is upset about that.
Maybe you can do a spreadsheet on it for us. Everybody loves to read a spreadsheet.

Are you making fun of sabermetrics?

Not sure what your agenda is, but the thread was to name your favorite player and why. Nobody is asking you for anything else. If you don't want to do that, why are you even bothering with this?

Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. Either you can have a minute of fun or you can do something different. I am not being paid for this. It's fun to see who thinks is a great player. That's all it was. You are welcome to participate.

Growing up, I was a huge fan of Tigers catcher Bill Freehan. So much so that I spent my first few years in Little League playing catcher, before realizing my skills were better suited for the outfield.

I'm surprised that Freehan never received serious consideration for the Hall of Fame. He was an 11-time All-Star, won 5 Gold Gloves, had a cannon for an arm, and through 2002 he had the highest fielding percentage all-time (.9933) among catchers. Though not a great hitter, he played through the high-mound era of the '60s and still hit .262 with 200 home runs. His home run and total bases (2,502) marks were third all-time for AL catchers (behind only Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra) when he retired. Between the Berra/Campanella and Bench/Fisk eras, Freehan was the premiere catcher in the major leagues. In 2001, baseball historian Bill James ranked Freehan as the 12th best catcher of all time.

I used to love Manny Ramirez. Not sure now. V-Mart is pretty cool. He cried when Cleveland traded him, which was unique and endearing.

I like Kershaw these days. Bumgarner too. Lindor seems to have an awesome attitude. I don't see any of these as an all-time fav, though.

Not sure I have an all time favorite. Like a favorite song - it's hard as a mother fucker to pick.

Paul Konerko a close second.

I hated Konerko because he murdered Tigers pitching.

And maybe because my wife thought he was hot.

Turns out, the guys I loved growing up were jackasses in real life. Kirby Puckett and Jose Canseco.
