My son (3yrs) has been saying shut up to my wife and I. Ass whoopings didn't work, ignoring didn't work, timeouts didn't work. So I went with what my mom did when I cussed, a good old fashioned soap in the mouth. He said "soap mouth taste nasty", "say shut up get soap", "boy Christmas get soap" (The Christmas Story). You know what its working. He rarely says it now and when he does he immediately realizes what he did, covers his mouth and screams running saying "no soap, no soap".
