So I'm watching Shark Week, a bunch of people were swimming out in the middle of nowhere Pacific, 900 miles east of Easter Island and of course someone gets attacked. Easter Island is 9 hours away and the medical facilities there are primitive so in order to save this person they had to radio the closest US Air Force base in Panama which is like 2K miles away. They fly a mobile hospital plane out to rescue her and all I can think is "that is a tremendous waste of my tax dollars".

On a related topic, I think they're starting to recoup money for skiers who go "out-of-bounds" and then get lost or trapped and they have to send out a rescue team to save them. That could be north of 20 grand these days.

Mixed messages out there

Last week i saw north shore search and rescue issued a press release saying "WE WILL NOT CHARGE YOU FOR THE COST OF YOUR RESCUE!!!"

People have stopped calling for help when lost (at least this summer)

I think it's Arizona (maybe other states as well) that now has a stupidity law. If you get stuck or hurt due to your own incompetence and/or negligence, you're required to reimburse the cost of your rescue.

I first read about it a few years ago when there was flash flooding in the Phoenix area. A bunch of streets were closed as a result. A guy in a Hummer pulls up to the barricade, gets out of his "I'm over-comensating for my shortcomings" mobile, moves the barricade, and drives around. Shockingly he gets stuck in the water and has to be rescued by helicopter. A few weeks later a bill shows up in the mail.

I think they should also charge any dumbass found at fault in a freeway accident during rush hour that causes delays. I would love to know that the Lexus SUV driver who yapping on his cell when he plows into the median barrier (making me late) is going to have to sell a kidney too.

YES!!! This would make me feel much better than sitting there in 2 1/2 hours of traffic saying to myself "somebody better be dead". One person's idiocy should not waste 2 + hours of 50,000+ commuters time. That's a lot of wasted life because somebody wasn't paying attention.

Always like OJ when I was a kid and he lived in Laguna Beach. We at times would skim board behind his house. He would come out and talk and sometimes feed us. Always took the time to stop and talk to anyone around town. Damn shame he had to go crazy. I was on the freeway going to a roller hockey game about 2 miles in front of him fir part of that chase. I drive past Nicole's grave site all the time

Ottawa testing $620K stealth snowmobile for Arctic - Technology & Science - CBC News

One Arctic policy expert questioned whether the cost of developing such a vehicle is money well-spent, particularly since he doesn't believe there are any significant security threats in the Far North.

"I don't see a whole lot of evidence that criminals and terrorists are scooting around Canada's North on snowmobiles and that we have to sneak up on them," said Michael Byers, a former federal NDP candidate who teaches international law at the University of British Columbia.

Byers said he's not sure whether defence officials have an accurate picture of Canada's actual needs. Perhaps, he added, they have an obsession with high technology.

"I can't help but wonder whether they've been watching too many (James) Bond movies."
