The Shallows (2016)

I'd give this movie an B+ for entertainment, but an F for practicality. Too many far-fetched circumstances that I couldn't go along with. Shark is the size of a 1-ton truck, chomps into her leg multiple times, yet she only has 2 lacerations on her leg about 8-10inches long? The shark doesn't show it's dorsal fin in low tide, but somehow does in high tide long enough for her to time it's laps around her? How convenient that she had a med school background. Somehow after a full day of no food or water and continuous bleeding, she still manages to have enough power to out-swim the shark? The shark can mow through hardened steel like a hot knife through butter without harming itself? Not to mention how she ultimately defeats the shark was a pretty ridiculous idea. I'm sure there were many more problems that i found with the movie, but I think you get the picture. This movie was made for cheap thrills, not realism. But I did find the movie to be entertaining nonetheless. The movie did a good job at keeping a solid storyline with heightened suspense. Blake Lively did an alright job, nothing stellar. The cinematography and score were a perfect fit. Nothing too over the top. Overall this movie was worth the watch, but its nothing to write home about.

Decent entertainment, but far from realistic... 7/10

Most movies nowadays (not just Horror flicks) don't have much realism imo. Escape-ism at it's finest.

Watch yourself! I'm not about ratings myself, but I do think its a good way to promote activity & participation within the thread. That's it, that's all!

Heatstroke (2014)

Hate to start off by saying this is a fairly flawed movie, but it really is. Carbon-copied formulaic plot, jarring gaps in narrative that made no sense for progression, and stereotypical characters & stupidity. With all that being said however, I didn't find it that hard to watch. The scenery & cinematics were pretty cool, and the acting was solid. I found the scientific material on hyenas mixed into the development of a theme around their behavior to be pretty clever. I was drinking at the time, so that might have had something to do with it lol. Overall it was better than expected. It passed the "falling asleep" test, so thats a win by itself. In general, if a film manages to entertain me enough to avoid that from happening, then it deserves an above-average rating.

Good start, slow & flawed progression, but still left a positive impression... 6/10

Seriously?

I read the book and watched The Ruins when it came out. I liked it.
I couldn't get past the idea of plants being the antagonist... Seemed too silly to me. That being said, I did find the infection-esque deaths to be pretty cool. The way the vines grew out of the limbs was pretty gnarly lookin. Aside from that, the characters pissed me off.

Final Girl (2014)

The cinematography in this movie was very unique. Made me think that the director was a photographer at some point. I'm sure they all are, but I think you can understand my point. Not just a photographer, but an exceptional one. All of the lighting and setting work was very clever. However I don't think the director understood how editing works. But that could be the producers' fault. What we view can be a chopped & screwed version of what the director's final product was. The background or purpose of the movie was lost in translation, their is almost zero character building, and the progression seemed odd. Overall this movie was a strange but innovative film. Seems like the director has good potential, but needs to spend more time in the editing department. Understanding how a viewer sees a work of art as opposed to forcing someone to understand it often results in disaster. The acting was ok, but it wasn't their fault they were given putty to work with. The plot was interesting but still lacked depth to make it a rounded film. This one escapes the disaster tag but I won't be singing any praises about it either.

Unique filming and ideas, but feels like an unfinished product... 5/10

Would You Rather is sick, twisted and well worth watching. If you're looking for a story that makes sense, you can probably pass...but we can say that about a lot of horror movies. @FaCe-LeE-uS has already covered the plot, so I'll just add my own little tidbits:

It has the look and feel of the better horror flicks made in the 70s and 80s; cheesy, but not too much (just a whiff).

It is pure psychological horror; there are no monsters, no heads being lopped off...but the tension and anticipation of what is going to happen next is riveting. That said, I predicted the 'twist' ending without much trouble.

Added B-Actor Bonus: Darnell (Crab Man) from My Name is Earl; Bob ("Tainted meat!") from The Walking Dead

BoobMeter: zero

Conclusion: A "What if Alfred Hitchcock directed Saw?" vibe goin' on here. Far fetched, but worth checking out.

Coming Soon!

The Woods (2016)

Release Date: September 16th

Synopsis:
A group of college students on a camping trip discover they are not alone.

Kudos to the teaser trailer & synopsis for not giving anything away. This is how trailers should be done IMO. Nothing irritates me more than when the trailer gives everything away. Most of the time I stop a trailer 30s in because of that. The director & writer tandem of Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett, who brought us V/H/S, V/H/S 2, The Guest, and You're Next, return for their next project. I've loved everything that I have seen from these guys, so I have no reason to think this movie is anything less than good. In the acting department they have a bunch of no-namers with heavy backgrounds in TV. Hard to tell what this movie has in store for us, but the suspense looks riveting. The filming style looks like a solid blend of normal 3rd person & 1st person. Aside from the obvious forest setting, this movie looks like it has a lot in store for us. Count me in!

I like it when the 1 chick took a big ass knife and started cutting herself open....
