Its just odd with Stamkos, Parise is what 9.5 AAV two or three years ago, Kane and Toews 10.5, kind of makes me think that Bowman thought the stamkos type would at least be 10 and his guys would not feel underpaid when players started getting 11 and 12.

I tend to agree, although the market last year and two years ago is always a bit of an unfair comparison. Times change, the cap changes, and probably most importantly the perceived movement in the cap changes from year to year.

But yeah, relative to those guys, the AAV for Stamkos is very generous in favor of TB.

I know people like to talk about taxes, but is it really that much of a factor? I am not sure. I think as much as anything, Stamkos looked at the 2016-17 rosters of the suitors and went with the best one out there. And for next season, the rosters aren't even close to comparable.

I'd make a different argument for the Habs - they need offence. They cannot score, they haven't been able to score for half a decade+ and it is probably the only reason they haven't gotten to a Cup final while having one of the best goalies ever in the crease. It's such an obvious need.

So they move their most valuable asset one-for-one for a lesser replacement in the same position? What's the logic to that? They're going to lose any trade for Subban unless it was a 1-for-1 for Connor McDavid, so if you aren't getting help in your areas of need what's the point?

If they had gotten a decent goalscorer and a top 4 d-man as a return for Subban, they wouldn't be a better team today but maybe with some auxiliary moves and UFA signings you can build around that return and you're better as a team eventually despite having lost one of the best players in the league. I just don't see the benefit to them other than being able to say they traded PK for another "star" player and now Carey Price will have to face 1 less shot per night that he would've stopped anyway.

I understand your first point and I felt the same way. However when looking at Weber's stats he puts up better offensive numbers than I thought he did. I still do not think he is as offensively talented as PK, but I do not think the drop off is as big as I first thought. In this system at least, in a more up tempo system the difference between the two would probably be greater.

I see no benefit to the trade whatsoever. I do not like it at all and I don't see the logic behind it. I just do not think its horrible. Just merely bad.

My one issue with Weber is he's played alongside a defensive partner of great talent his entire career. If Markov finally starts to slow down, then what?

Which trade do you guys think is worse, Montreal's or Edmonton's?

In terms of player value vs player value, it's Edmonton by a country mile.

In terms of fan displeasure and PR nightmares, Montreal.

Correct. NMC don't move with a player. The Preds can honor it, but there's no advantage to that.

Wait, what? You trade for someone you don't have to honor their NMC that another team signed?

Scott Hartnell, please report to Jarmo's office immediately.

From Friedman's 30:

The Hall trade finally brought some truth to a boatload of Edmonton rumours. There was definitely discussion with Minnesota on a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Matt Dumba deal, but the Oilers made it very clear that wasn’t enough to pry loose Nugent-Hopkins and asked for more. That’s where it fell apart.

I don't know if Elliotte's got this wrong or if Edmonton are just certifiably fucking insane - Dumba is a younger, more offensive right D who can man a 1st PP unit and the asking price was the one guy who you pretty much don't have room for on your team. How do you say "that's not enough" for RNH but then turn around and trade Hall for Larsson one-for-one?

If a offensively challenged team benches their best player, now in his mid 20s, every time he makes a mistake trying to make something happen; they might as well trade him.

/Stamkos probably was told if he signed with Toronto, he would have to donate a bajillion to Sick Kids.

and he saw what that gets you 5 minutes earlier when his buddy PK got traded lol

It's not that Weber is a bad player or even bad offensively but he's not in Subban's league. He generates offense on the PP; PK does it at even strength and on the PP.

PK was 10th last year in even strength points per 60 among D-men. Weber was 52nd sandwiched among the likes of Nathan Beaulieu, Jake Muzzin and Luke Schenn.

Montreal has, in recent years, struggled to find offense 5-on-5. PK is one of the best players in the world at providing that and they shipped him out.

The funniest part about the whole thing was how many of these stories there were - that GMs thought MTL got the better player, that Central Div players/coaches were happy to see Weber elsewhere.

It's comforting to see that so many GM's are still blind to reality.

Troy Brouwer talking to the Flames? - Following snippet taken from LeBrun's blog.

The Vancouver native has plans to build a house in Calgary, which he wants to make his offseason and retirement home. That’s why he’s there this week meeting with builders. But it just so happens that a source says the Flames are among the teams with interest in the winger and that Brouwer -- since he was in Calgary anyway -- met with the Flames in person this week. But, again, there are other teams interested. So who knows?

So I am looking at Preds ticket packages for next year. Besides seasons, they have two different "half season" packages including 24 games. Both half seasons are scattered throughout the year, but have radically different opponent groups.

Both groups include games with: TB, CHI, CAL, STL, WPG, MIN, CBJ, NYI and DET.

One group includes: ARI, FL, SJ, WAS, NJD, LAK and BOS.

The other group includes: PIT, OTT, ANA, PHA, NYR, VAN, EDM (twice), CAL, BUF and TOR.

Hmmmm, which one should I go with :noidea::noidea:

Door #2 it is. Giving up Ovi, but getting McJesus twice, Eichel, Matthews/Marner/Nylander, Phil the Thrill and the inevitable 0-0 game against King Henrik.

I wonder if the Preds front office realizes how unbalanced the packages are.

Most interesting of all: Neither plan includes MTL

/oooh and I can get 25% off my PK jersey

Maybe Jim Benning picks up a broken down Dennis Seidenberg to replace Olympian Dan Hamhuis?!?
