He's apparently claiming that Dominicans are black imposters

"Fans look down from their seats onto the baseball field, see dark-colored skin and might assume they are African-American players. But increasingly, the players instead hail from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or Venezuela.

"People see dark faces out there, and the perception is that they're African American," Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter says. "They're not us. They're impostors.

"Even people I know come up and say, 'Hey, what color is Vladimir Guerrero? Is he a black player?' I say, 'Come on, he's Dominican. He's not black.' "

"As African-American players, we have a theory that baseball can go get an imitator and pass them off as us," Hunter says. "It's like they had to get some kind of dark faces, so they go to the Dominican or Venezuela because you can get them cheaper. It's like, 'Why should I get this kid from the South Side of Chicago and have Scott Boras represent him and pay him $5 million when you can get a Dominican guy for a bag of chips?'

"I'm telling you, it's sad."

What a dumbass. How does he think black people got to the Dominican Republic? He should know that it was most likely the same way he got over here, these are possible relatives he's talking about.

Maybe, however, it's almost patriotic. It sounds like he believes black Americans are being passed over for players south of the equator because the MLB teams don't have to pay them as much. Similar to the way construction companies pass over Americans for illegal immigrants from south of the border, because they can be hired for lower wages.

Either way, Tori Hunter didn't articulate it very well and ended up looking like a moron and a bigot.

There is a such thing as an African-American... just because you don't agree with the wording or whatnot doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

there is not.. you can't claim a whole damn continent, especially when nobody on that continent is unified

I'd call him a moron, but that's giving him too much credit. He's a definite less-on, in many ways.

Who the fuck are you or myself to tell someone what to call themselves? Why do people CARE what other people decide to identify as?

if it made sense, i would acknowledge it
I think most people could give a rat's ass if you acknowledge it or not... African-American is one of the choices on forms you fill out. Technically, most "Black" people aren't black either. They're brown. Should they not call themselves Black either?

I'm not white as paper, but I don't mind being called white. People are clearly too sensitive about their identity these days, but it's natural to question odd self-labeling choices like "african-american." I mean, really, it's just kind of a silly choice, like if I called myself European-American instead of white. Kind of an eye-roller. Do I really care? No. But I'll comment on someone acting odd, there's nothing wrong with that. It's like critiquing fashion... "did you see what she was wearing? That's a little weird..."
