What do you consider to be a blue blood program?

I mostly consider the ones who have had a history combined with recent success.

USC, OU, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, & Alabama are the elite blue bloods IMO.

Those I used to consider but are on the way out are PSU and Nebraska.

Those newer and on the cusp of being in are Florida and FSU

Except for 2013....what have they done that would put them ahead of LSU ?

LSU had a much better decade between 2000-10. But since the new decade started, Florida State has been better. You said it ain't a discussion. I think it could be.

Thank you. FSU was mediocre-to-bad until Bowden took over. They've been top notch since. A long string of success since the 70s is right on the cusp of blue blood status IMO.
Its not even questionable as a topic IMO. You're answer is the correct answer and the only one IMO

I included GA Tech on my list.

Pitt lost out on two of my 3 categories of qualification. They don't have a large fan base, and they have gone decades being mediocre at best.

IMO the only other justifiable acknowledgement one could conceivably excogitate
that would be palpable other than the fine institutions @Tharvot presented would be Boise State, And thats only under the theory of with being as everything else related to Boise State being blue their blood is as well. We will need testing to confirm tho and a Boise state fan to volunteer as a test subject

I can't believe people are actually bringing up Tennessee. :dhd:

You are definitely showing your age...

Tennessee is:

9th in all time wins
5th in bowl appearances
8th in NFL draft picks
8th in # of weeks ranked in the AP Poll
12th in National Titles
13th in Consensus All-Americans

and they have a winning record against all but 14 FBS programs and 5 of those would be even with 1 win.

Tennessee has been mediocre for the better part of your lifetime, but they are a lot closer to blue blood than FSU.

Yeah. I noticed that when I was researching through college football history this past 20 minutes or so. They are definitely a lot better than I thought.

I would say Florida State and Miami count as blue bloods just because of the long line of successful players they have had. That's another way you can look at it. NFL player success.

I don't think I would include Florida State. I don't know much about them but didn't they have a pretty crappy history before Bowden? I really don't know.

If were talking about teams that have been pretty consistent over the last 40-50 years, I'd say of the top of my head would be lists:

Tier 1 Teams
1) Alabama
2) Notre Dame
3) USC
4) Miami
5) Ohio State
6) Oklahoma
7) Nebraska
8) Michigan
9) Texas
10) Auburn
11) Penn St
12) Tennessee

Tier 2 Teams
1) LSU
2) Florida
3) Michigan St
4) Oregon
5) Georgia
6) Georgia Tech
7) Clemson
8) VaTech
9) Iowa

I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but that is the list off the top of my head.

Basically, these teams would be weeds that you simply can't kill. They may have a run of bad seasons/bad coaches, but will always rise to the top when they have the right guy in place, and will often still be pretty good even if they have mediocre coaching.

I don't consider either blue bloods they're borderline at best. The only true blue blood in the SEC is Alabama . To say any other teams teams that it listed or try to make cases for teams being blue bloods waters down the term. While some teams and fan bases may desire the tag it's an honor that's been written throughout the history of CFB. Any other teams will always be nothing more than successful programs at best. It is cute when other teams try to make a claim to be a blue blood tho

I'll repeat: old program (actual definition of blue blood), consistent winning, destination job for coaches:

USC MICH TOSU ND TX OU Bama

That's it folks. There's a mezzanine level that includes PSU NU, etc

Then there's the next tier, but the above is it.

Anything else just waters down the definition of blue blood. Theres A lot of history in the definition. Its a title that was earned throughout many years of history of college football Its not a shiny little prize for teams or fans to claim.

Unless my eyes deceive me, you didn't mention FSU anywhere on this list. If your cutoff is the past 40-50 years, they're definitely Tier 1
