I'm going:

Bear Bryant, just because he was my kind of coach
Knute Rockne, just great for college football. Did you see that movie? Awesome
Bud Wilkinson, the winning streak, years of excellence

Honorable Mention: Bill Snyder. A great coach, amazing what he does with what he has to work with each year.

I left out two, what a smart person I am.

Nick Saban, WTH, got to include him. List is incomplete without
Mack Brown, hey. all Longhorns who lived through the 1970-2005 drought, know what he did for the program.

Lou Holtz

Holtz is the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 20 rankings. He also won a national title in 88. Be careful tho, he spits when he talks.

I thought about Saban, then I remembered he's only had one undefeated season (2009). He was the benefactor of someone else losing for his other NC's. I can see him being considered though.

I threw Haden Fry in there because no one else had and the guy could recognize coaching talent and taught them well.

It's nearly impossible to pick just 5 as there are many worthy.

I can't believe Woody isn't getting more love. 5 titles - and none were back to back, meaning mostly all with different rosters. 13 conference titles. And he had an amazing right hook!

But punching an opposing player tends to suck a lot of love. Kind of like Pete Rose and gambling. Some mistakes are worse than others.

Sorry but listing a bunch of coaches with rosters with blue chip recruits at nearly every position doesn't impress me. Snyder built a program from the bottom up. He never has a top recruiting class. He leaves and they suck. He comes back and wins the big12.

And USC had a Home & Home in 2016, they would be almost 500 with Alabama:rollseyes:

And put almost evrry single one on Probation. Amazing that he never just lumped in with guys like Jackie Sherrill

now, now, no reason to get all riled up, I got nothing against St Tom, but his head to head vs Barry was not very good, ya know...5 out of 17 isn't that impressive.

I guess most people just don't know that Switzer had a 12-5 record against Osborne :laugh3:

Nope, we're all aware of it. As it had already been mentioned by another OU fan.

7 of Barry's wins were when Nebraska was running a balanced offense. Once Osborne changed his offense to the option in 1980 and brought in dual threat QB's like Turner Gill he went 4-4 with Barry.

My guess is the reason more people aren't picking Barry is because of the probations. I.E. How he did things.

The Notre Dame and USC coaches aren't getting much love.

Can't speak to Notre Dame outside of the fact that they are a team that folks either love or hate. Not much middle ground with them, so it might be effecting that. They have at least 2 coaches that a very strong case can be made for top 5.

USC coaches get discredited a bit because of the recruiting advantages. After all, it's a lot easier to convince a kid to come play football in Southern California than in most other places in the country.

Doesn't mean that USC hasn't had great and potentially top 5 coaches, but they're just not going to get the credit that they would if they were coaching in other places.

This board is actually supposed to be about discussing college football. That is what I am doing. I also laid out my case. I am sorry if questioning an opinion offends you. I also figure post people aren't going to cry about having a logical discussion.

You don't seem to be questioning...more like attempting to correct. I think a lot of us here know quite a bit about college football, especially our own teams. I'm all for discussion, but it seems a bit presumptuous of you to essentially tell us we're wrong when it comes to coaches of our own team.

As to the Devaney/Osborne discussion, when you mention how Devaney won at a slightly lower percentage than Osborne even though he took over a program that was not as good, you neglect to mention that he got that percentage over a period of just ten years compared to Osborne's 25, and had two seasons going 6-4 along the way. Osborne never won less than 9 in a season over 25 years. If Osborne was not at Nebraska, there is a chance that Nebraska would have ZERO national titles. Instead, we have 5. You like to mention Snyder at K-State, but what advantage exactly does Nebraska have over K-State, other than the tradition started by Devaney and solidified by Osborne?

Great Mack won 9 a lot. It is pretty easy when you play at least 10 of 12 games vs inferior competition. K State is a secondary school, little brother if you will. Lacks the money and the fan base. kSU stadium held less than 50k during Osborne's time. It sits at 50k now. Nebraska was at around 75k in the early 70s. Currently, it is almost 90k. Tradition is also a very big recruiting tool. If you you can not see the differences in the programs, than I am not sure how you can objectively measure a coaches success. Take a look at Saban. He has pretty much brought every program to its modern heights. He did that at MSU, until Dantonio came to MSU. Does not mean Dantonio is better, but it certainly makes you wonder what he could do at a top 5 program. I simply prefer to judge coaches based on their deviation from the program mean and contribution to the game. If we just use winning percentage and titles, than we are basically deciding things like Heisman voters.
