I just read this most recent "flip" from Hawaii was a QB, but is going to play the TE position due to his size-n-weight. Kid wants to play that position as well.

Ohio State has a TE playing QB right now. At least he is the size of one

Good gawd...me Beavs are continuing to raid the Utah Utes "cookie jar". I liked the Utes season last year, especially on Defense. Keep on going to their well til it dries out I say...

Rivals three-star running back Taylor Thomas, out of Jacksonville, Florida, will take a visit to Corvallis later this month despite a commitment to Utah, he said this week.

Although the 5-foot-8, 180-pound back is still strongly connected to the Utes, he did indicate the the Beavers had opened the door a crack.

Oregon State has an ace up its sleeve, however, as three-star cornerback Jay Irvine is Taylor's cousin and a strong lean to the Beavers. In fact, the two are planning to take an official visit to Corvallis together.

The opportunity to play together at the next level is intriguing for the Florida duo.

"When they offered me, he's been bugging me about it every day about going up to visit him and us playing together and stuff like that," Taylor said. "It'd be fun. We play on different sides of the ball, but it'd be fun to be around each other. It's something we've been dreaming about since we were little."

As a featured back, Taylor is a little smaller than most Pac-12 skill players, but he's explosive. As a junior, he tallied just under 2,000 yards with 18 touchdowns.

It may come down to an official visit and help on the inside from a cousin, but Oregon State appears to be in position to give Utah a serious fight for its running back commit.

I wonder how many recruits who have committed to other schools Jim Harbaugh can get to follow him.

Nice. Surprised Husky fans aren't all up in arms about that evil coach taking recruits with him.

Yepperz....ALL QUIET on the western front. We'll sneak up on the Huskies, Cards and Ducks soon enough. We have gotten some quality coaches quickly and their already depleting their known supply depots for talent. Yeah, all we get at State is 3* or worse..."times, they are a changing..." as Bob Dylan once sang.

Right now you're at #97 . Between Bowling Green and Appalachian State. I'm glad you're feeling optimistic but I doubt they are shaking in their boots right now.

Discussion of the evening: would Pete Carroll have had the same success at another D1 school as he had at usc?

Good question. It would depend on the school I suppose. He is ultra-competitive which works well at any program. However, he also liked to have fun and it gave some folks the impression that he didn't take things "serious enough." That actually cost him a few top recruits over the years. In fact, I forget who it was, but there was tOSU player who gave that exact reason (I wonder if he had the same opinion when USC laid a 35-3 beatdown on them a season or 2 later?).

I don't know if he would have had the same level of success, but I think he would have come close.

Depends on the school obviously.
Another school in the Pac? Maybe at Oregon or Washington, and a bigger maybe Oregon State. these three owned 2000. Pete went to USC off a 5-7 season and got them to 6-6 in year 1. so going to one of these three coming off at least 10 wins I think he could have kept it rolling. I have a hard time believing he would have had an easy time building up an other programs at the time even though WSU, Stanford, and Arizona State had degrees of success over the next couple seasons.

I think it was a perfect storm. Not all coaches can be great some if you gave them all the breaks the good coaches get and they still wouldnt win.
Would Oregon be where it is without Uncle Phil and his marketing of that team? Or would it be Boise State- TCU- A&M type of team?

I think he would have had success at any school, but it would have been in terms of that schools success. For USC success is consistently finishing in the top 10 and competing for a National Championship. I think if he had taken over say an Arizona he could have significantly elevated their standards but I don't think he could have gotten the athletes to finish in the top 10 each year or compete for National Titles.

Further, he may have had trouble keeping his position at a different school. He ran a very different practice than most people are used to. I remember people from outside the program observing practice and saying it looked lackadaisical. An example that comes to mind is that Pete Carroll's teams often had no running at the end of practice. Instead the players were supposed to sprint between drills from location to location to get their conditioning in. I think if he improved Arizona from 5-7 to 9-3 but people saw his unorthodox practice schedule he would have had trouble keeping his job. Even if he was winning well over the schools historical win percentage unorthodox makes people nervous.

Also looking at the Seahawks success makes me think he would have done alright anyplace. But again he was very unorthodox. I believe he consistently received "D" Grades on his draft choices, he won the Super Bowl and was a genius. But had they dropped the NFC Championship on the way to the SB would he be out of a job now?

It's worth noting that he came into the Pac 10 at a fortuitous time. There was no real king at the time. UCLA wasn't anything special. The NW schools were putting out some really good teams, but weren't really consistent on a year in and year out basis. The Arizona schools were both down. There wasn't a program you could point to at the time and say "They're great every year". Nobody needed dethroning.
