Does his salary still count against the salary cap?

No if he retires before next season, his remaining 9 mill won't go against the cap next season.

If the man has any decency in him - he will retire - every time he steps on the court - he gets banged up again

Short answer, yes. His salary will count against next years cap. The LAL have 2 options. They can either "stretch" the $9m owed to Nash over twice as many years +1 year left on the contract or pay it out exactly how it is structured in the contract.

So with or with out Nash $9m will be on the books next year unless they stretch it over 3 equal payments for 3 years. (1 year left*2+1 more year=3)

The way I am understanding that is if Nash were to retire and forego the entire last year of his salary - then it would come off the books, but as the article says - then they can negotiate a buyout

For example if Nash agreed to a buy out of 6.3 million -then the Lakers would waive him and the 6.3 gets divided by three over the next three years. From what I have heard from nash, however I think the Lakers are screwed for that money - Nash intends to stay and collect

doesn't seem like he intends to retire regardless of his health...rather get paid to sit on bench I guess.

It looks that way to me, but I don't blame him - the Lakers was willing to give him a three year contract and they both agreed so business is business. Shaq Oneal stayed around to collect 20 million a year for the last two years that he didn't do squat - very few players are going to walk away from guaranteed money

He's not going to retire. He's already said so. He's going to take a check as long as someone is going to give him one.

Nobody in their right mind is leaving 9 mill on the table.

Last week he was quoted as saying the he wanted the 9M, regardless of what anyone thought.
Did you miss it?

And for the record, it was stated that Nash decided to come back this year to see how his body holds up and give him enough information to decide what to do next year - indicating that he might not come back. That was after he shot his mouth off about wanting the 9 million

What Happens If Steve Nash Retires?

You will see the entire Buss family doing cartwheel naked outside the Staples Center.

Nash's 2014-15 salary wouldn't count toward the salary cap. Basically, you would add his signing bonus plus the first two years salary of his contract and divide that by 3. You would subtract what was charged against the '12-'13 & '13-'14 salary cap from that total and that would be the cap hit for next year. It wouldn't be much (likely 1/3 his bonus).

Nash isn't going to retire and shouldn't. His contract was a risk and the Lakers lost the gamble. Nash has no reason to negotiate a "buyout".

I might join them -

Seriously though - you don't know this because sooner or later it has to become obvious even to Steve Nash that everytime he steps onto the court - something breaks down. There is one additional factor that many of you are forgetting - that as the director of the Canadian basketball teams he is trying to build - he has other options and he could easily be offered a job in coaching. Playing in the NBA is without a question his first passion, but sooner or later father time is undefeated and you have to face reality and at this point you simply don't know as much as you pretend to - You're not Steve Nash and you don't know what's going on in his mind

Nash has always been about the money, no way he walks away from any of it.

Can we just have Jeanie doing the naked cartwheels?

I agree. You gamble, you lose, you pay. That's how it works. I think Nash wants to try and finish out his career on the court and I have no issue with that. If it becomes apparent that he just isn't going to make it back, then I think he should retire and the Lakers should just pay him the remaining $9 million on his contract and not bother with the stretch provision.

How about go fuck yourself?

I think everyone, based on their answers thought you were asking what I thought.

Why not just a ask a general question asking how does the salary cap work if/when a player retires instead of naming Nash?

Better yet, why not do a 1 minute google search?
