So, will criminal charges be filed like they were for Bertuzzi? Other than nationality jurisdiction differences, what's the difference?

The outcome (hopefully). Unless Orpik can cite damages, like income, which he can't unless he never plays again, it'd be a tough case I'd imagine. I don't think Orpik will do it either. But he certainly has a criminal case, seeing as it meets all the things needed for assault in the state of Mass. (Read article, see if I can find it)

Nick Kypreos: "If Thornton really wanted to hurt Orpik, he would have messed him up even more"

:L

/By the way, Thornton may appeal his 15 game suspension.

Can it go up if he appeals? I don't think so. He should just take the 15 and let it go.

I can see the argument from Thornton's perspective that for a first time offender, 15 games is pretty harsh. I wouldn't be surprised if he does decide to appeal (and he is well within his rights to do so).

1st act should mean shit.

1st act is the reason he still has a chance to play hockey this year....................

What he did was uncalled for and there is no need for that in hockey

no I was more thinking if a criminal sentence gets appealed a judge can add to the sentence. I think 15 is more than enough but I just dont think for what he did he should appeal. just leave it and serve it

Yeah I doubt Orpik would bring charges unless it cost him his career but that would all be legal stuff which I have no clue about.

But what is interesting in Toronto this got Dino a night in jail: .

Oh I agree and I hope he just wants to move on from this incident and take his medicine, I'm just saying that he and his representatives could argue that 15 games is severe.

/If you remember, Raffi got 4 games reduced from his original 25 game suspension via appeal.

1st off. What torres hit??????????/ If it the one on Hossa then that plain BS

2nd. He is doing something a coward does. A coward coplains and appels to get it reduced. A man takes his medience, comes back and Plays hard

Yup, Bettman took four games off the Torres suspension for his hit on Hossa. As for your second point, I agree.

Just curious does anyone know if the appeal is manditory via the NHLPA contract with the NHL? If so it might be Thorton's idea.

I can see the argument from Thornton's perspective that for a first time offender, 15 games is pretty harsh. I wouldn't be surprised if he does decide to appeal (and he is well within his rights to do so).

If what he did remotely resembled a hockey play, then I could understand the possibility of appealing and use his "first time offense" defense. But if he does appeal.... he's asking the NHLPA association to stick up for him for his premeditated assault on another one of their own.

How awkward and selfish would that look on Thornton's part?

If the league thinks that a 15 game suspension will be a deterrent or sending a message then they're in for rude awakening. They clearly want the Thornton's ( minimal skilled enforcer's) of the league to stay employed by the NHL.

I can understand his appeal because this is the biggest suspension Shanny's doled out...but I don't buy the first time offender argument. 15 fits the action. If he had a history of this stuff it would've been 20-30 games if not more. If a guy like Torres or Cooke did this, they'd be gone half a year or more.

Yup, Bettman took four games off the Torred suspension for his hit on Hossa. As for your second point, I agree.

You know what is sad about Buttman taking the 4 games off I bet that a ploy on his part to help negotiations with the union contract.

With the new deal I bet Buttman doesn't change Thorton's suspension length.
