Coach's Notebook: Jan. 18

What do you tell them on Sunday morning? How is that speech different from any other speech?

“I don’t give speeches. I give information. I’m not a speech giver.”

I'm into that!

Do you count him in the Jim Harbaugh coaching tree?

“Well, the first and best is [49ers offensive coordinator] Greg Roman. The job that Greg has done this year I think is really in so many ways been just one of the best I’ve ever seen. And we’ll talk more about that later. We’ve got a job to do right now. But, he’s the shining star in my book.”

I like how he attacked that one, too.

48 hours from now I'll either be really happy or very disappointed. But right now I'm excited and wishing the game was about to kick off.

this will be a great game, a battle of strength vs. strength. ATL has one of the best offensive attacks in the NFC and SF has one of the best defenses in the game. Lately, the SF defense has been less than stellar and the ATL offense looked sluggish in the 2nd half of the divisional match up vs. Seattle. I think Kaepernick will have a good game, but will not dominate ATL like he did against the lack luster GB def. The deciding factor for me is whether or not SF's defense can slow down Matt Ryan, who has the best receiving core in the NFL.

Walker blames drops on lack of concentration | CSN Bay Area

"I even brought A.J. with me because he's going to be a key factor, in this game, he could be," Walker said. "That's what we need. We need guys to make plays. I consider myself one of the playmakers."

Glad to see he brough AJ with him.

Everything im hearing is great this week sounds like a lot of work being done. Like many of the players were saying how they were all excited to be here last yr after a big saints win. Same time this yr and it is just all business.

I've read and heard alot about Atlanta's tackling ability on defense or a lack of it might be the better way to put it. Not the best way to look at it but here are their missed tackle numbers (source: PFF) compared to San Francisco's this season. The number in parantheses is the number of total snaps they played).

Thomas DeCoud (1,108 snaps) - 21
Asante Samuel (892) - 21

Tavares Gooden (8) - 0

Exactly 1/2 the number of missed tackles for the 49ers defense. Again, not the most detailed or accurate way of looking at determining the most tackle-sound teams, but I wanted to see the difference in the two numbers between the two defenses.

One thing I forgot to add. Since 2008, they have Willis with only 24 missed tackles.

2012 - 5
2011 - 2
2010 - 8 (3 in week 16)
2009 - 4
2008 - 5

Pretty dang good.

Total defensive snaps

Atlanta - 1,109 (65.2/game)
San Francisco - 1,143 (67.2/game)

Total defensive snaps

Atlanta - 1,109 (65.2/game)
San Francisco - 1,143 (67.2/game)

So using this,

ATL had missed tackles on 12.6% of their snaps
SFO had missed tackles on 6.12% of their snaps

What we can't account for is multiple missed tackles on the same play...

Thanks for the data Pozz. I like seeing it on a percentage basis.
