both

he clearly lost the team somewhere. I'd suspect it started with him freezing out Jaden Ivey for no reason. The sad thing is Ivey was ecstatic to come play for detroit.

He finally landed on a reasonable rotation last night with Ausur at the 4 and giving up on Stew being a 4. They gotta move someone at the 5 obviously. Jalen Duren is their starting center. Which that whole log jam isn't Montys fault.

Have to think they could easily move a 5 once trades get moving again (and they get healthier at the 5), maybe to add to a Bog trade. What would you target in return? Obviously, if Bog is included we're talking draft picks and matching salary (preferably expiring).

I don't care lol. Picks I guess. Clear salary. If they are going to suck they are wasting Bogs time

I don't know much about their depth or fit for their rotation, was just wondering what you see as the glaring gaps.

If you make the playoffs, you don't get the high draft pick (out of the lottery by rule).

Stil doesn't justify guaranteeing a team a playoff spot with 3/4 of the season left.
There will be years where the 10 seed wins like 32 games.

Don’t think that needs to be protected.

Getting the 10 seed isn’t a major reward, but it could give the tournament a bit more meaning as insurance for a team that has bad injury luck in the second half.

And? Most years it won't. It still doesn't justify guaranteeing a team a playoff spot in December.

It's not. It's giving them a Play-In spot. An event created only a few seasons ago. It's not like they would be getting a top 4 seed.

Why put it all on the line though?

With a few tweaks this Pacers team could get HCA for most of the playoffs. Heck, they're one game in the loss column away from the 2nd seed as it currently stands.

If the prize for winning the IST is a 7/8 seed spot, this all become irrelevant. Pacers get a top 4 seed and this is a non issue.

I really don't think a team with a legitimate chance of gaining HCA in the playoffs is going to give that all up for a chance at the 8-15th pick. Because let's be honest, there are a lot worse teams out there that are going to get more ping-pong balls than the Pacers.

Yeah, this doesn't do anything except show why it's unnecessary,

I just don't see it as a problem if they do choose that route. I wouldn't, but then again I don't like the play-in games either. Any time an earned playoff position is at risk over less than the outcome of a 5 game series is dirty pool IMO, but the league already broke that seal. Throw in the MLB wildcard additions to that too.

Look, all these IST situations are hypothetical. Nothing has actually happened yet. I just get the feeling that if a play in spot was on the line, it would make the "lesser" games ie. Bulls v Hawks for example, a lot more competitive.

The discussion has been around guaranteeing a 7 seed. But even guaranteeing a play in spot in December is unnecessary.

Why? Serious question. Just wondering why you'd be so against it?

Because it's unnecessary. Heck, the arguments for it show that. When things like "it really won't come in to play much" and "the winner will nearly always be a top 20 team" are being used, it shows it's unnecessary.

Also, you are guaranteeing a playoff spot of some sort with 6 months left in the season. Suppose a legit playoff team has some injury issues that cost them enough games that they end up having to be a play in team...but they end up out because the 10th spot was taken by a team that won a few games in December?

Except to the teams that would be 9th/10th/11th in the standings.

And the 9th, 10th and 11th teams would be in that position because of the season they had, not because of games played 1/4 of the way into the season.

We're not just talking about games played 1/4 of the way in. We're talking about winning a tournament.

Only winning $500k doesn't mean much to players making $40m a season. Nor does it matter to the fans.

If they want a IST then make it meaningful.

Why are you referencing the absolute highest paid players

Max Christie def gives a fuck he has another 500k in his pocket

Max Christie isn't going to change the outcome to those games.

I mentioned the highest plaid players because they will actually make a difference.

You can only do so much though. In the end, it's just an in-season tournament to spice up the Nov/Dec schedule a bit.

Giving a team a play in spot isn't exactly going to stir things up too much.

The reason for the IST was to make the Nov/Dec games more meaningful. And it's been an astounding success.

But sooner or later people will stop caring. Especially the fans.
