A bunch of “Best of...” threads have been posted recently, and the same general argument (fight?) seems to arise in each. The criteria for what makes something “The Best”.
I don’t think it is a single element that makes something “The Best”, but rather a collection of aspects.
Initial “shock” or twist - Sixth Sense, Se7en, Crying Game
Power - Passion of the Christ, Saving Private Ryan
Rewatchability - Most comedies
Quoteability - Holy Grail, Godfather
Emotion - Bryan’s Song, Old Yeller
Originality - Matrix, JoJo Rabbit
Cultural Impact - Blazing Saddles, Groundhog Day, New Hope
Being strong in just one category does not put you on any lists, imho. Even being THE best in one of the categories doesn’t guarantee anything (Crying Game is known for one of the biggest “shocks” in cinematic history, yet it rarely makes any “Best Of” lists).
