Santana got 450 AB last year playing multiple positions because players do and will most likely get hurt. Players also don’t play very well sometimes.
How did Santana and Pence get their 827 plate appearances in when Gallo-LF, DeShields-CF, Mazara-RF, Choo-Dh and Guzman-1B were all penciled in nice and neat on the depth chart at the beginning of the 2019 season?
Depth is important, good depth is even more important if you want to have a good team.
The cool thing about Santana being the depth is that he can literally play anywhere besides SP/C.
It seems like every year 650-800 AB come from the non starters due to injury and or performance. Having a guy who can step in anywhere instead of just 2 spots is so so valuable.
Forgot about Solak. So as suggested if we sign Pillar which I could care less about then we have Santana, Solak and Choo that we have to fit into the rotation.I tend to agree with this in principle but especially if CF is and was our only bogey. Santana is the ideal great utility guy on a great team.
Issue is Rangers have quite a few unknowns. Even Frazier is not a top notch 3B but likely better than we can put out there.
From my vantage point, 1B and 2B not proven, we still need to get Solak in asap, and a guy like Castellanos is probably a better pickup than Pillar.
Trying to gauge team's approach this year. With Odor you have an immediate fallback with Solak or maybe even Santana. We don't have that with Guzman as of now.
Guess what I am saying is we need more of a complete team for Santana to be the super utility guy
Then when you get a complete team there won't be nearly as many AB available for a bench guy.I tend to agree with this in principle but especially if CF is and was our only bogey. Santana is the ideal great utility guy on a great team.

As it is, Santana can fill in at other positions if there is a longterm injury, but he needs a primary position to play on a regular basis. On this team that position is CF. If Elvis breaks his wrist Santana can move to SS and Heineman or Gallo can play in CF. Of course, if IKF improves offensively you might want to leave Santana in CF and let IKF play SS.
Santana gives the team options in case of injury, but the idea of thinking a utility/bench spot is more important than him playing every day is just silly. JD himself is tempted to think that way, but he has had bad ideas before so that doesn't surprise me.
Lol. I wasn't including you. You seem to think we are better off with Santana at a position on a regular basis, at least for now.Silly me
I remember there were several guys on the other boards who used to tell me how if we ever did fire Wash, that he would have another team snap him up right away and make him their manager.
Oops carry on guys. Another burner

I think I would wait to see how Jung hits this year before I would rank him that high.

If Acuna has the athleticism of Ronald Acuna we have us some kind of SS for the future.Baseball America’s Texas Rangers top 10 prospects
2019 first round pick Josh Jung is No. 1 in the rankings at BA but the biggest takeaway is the inclusion of 2019 J2 signees Maximo Acosta at No. 5 and Bayron Lora at No. 9 with 2018 signee Luisangel Acuna at No. 8. Pitcher Ronny Henriquez makes the list at No. 10 after signing out of the Dominican Republic in 2017.
OF Lora was the headliner of the J2 period for the Rangers over the summer but as the year grew on, scouts and people in the know began to hype SS Acosta as the top player in Texas’ International haul.
Acuna — brother of Atlanta Bravessensation Ronald — was one of the lesser heralded signings from the Rangers’ crop last year but he slashed .342/.438/.455 in the Dominican Summer League as a shortstop in 2019 and obviously has the pedigree.
Henriquez pitched his first season in the Dominican in 2018 before jumping two levels and joining Low-A Hickory in 2019 where he struck out 99 in 82 innings spanning 19 starts and 21 appearances while turning 19 years old over the summer.
