One thing to keep in mind is that prior to Kluber's injury last May, his ERA was at 5.80. Also, his last 17 starts in 2018 saw him put up a good ERA of 3.75, good but not ace-like.

My initial point was made to address the question concerning if the Rangers were "done with top quality powered moves after Rendon mishap." To me the acquisition of Kluber does not fall into that category.

I also hope Kluber pitches like an ace. The downside of that is that means he gets out of here and signs a big contract somewhere else in a couple of years.
That may be true and if it is I hope at that point we get something in return for him.

Verlander's was at 3.82 when he was traded. But what you say is valid but I am hoping the year off actually rejuvenates his arm.

I doubt we would trade him while we pursue a WC berth. The most we would get would probably be a draft pick as compensation.

We did lowball him, you said so yourself. We went in with a lowball offer that was worse than everyone had already stated (everyone knew he already had a 7 year offer on the table) and expected to be able to use that lowball as a starting point. If I were his agent I wouldn't have felt the need to allow Texas a second chance to waste my time either.

Bottom line, we did lowball both years and dollars. Why even bother dealing with that team? Texas hopefully learned a valuable lesson, and that is if you REALLY want something then you do what it takes to get it. You don't try to get cute.
We heard in real dollars that it was close but no disagreement about length of contract.

More of what I am saying is perception of offer although yes not our best offer was not as bad as perceived

I think Rendon wanted to play with Trout and Ohtani

One reason not to always go in rebuild mode even if guys are not extended in what some day is a timely fashion

No one wanted to go 7+ years for a pitcher?

I guess my point is, I don't understand why there's been such a blowback because we didn't "do what it takes" to get Rendon, but when it comes to Cole, not giving out an absurd contract makes more sense.

That's the difference between pitchers and position players and big contracts... usually more risk in pitchers

what would you be willing to trade to the Rockies for Nolan Arenado and his 7 year $234M contract?

Good question. He would make up for everything and more because of his glove for not getting Rendon.

I'm not high on Leody Tavares, so I'd start there and gauge interest
according to the article on Bleacher Report & Evan Grant it would have to start with one of: Sam Huff, Josh Jung, Cole Winn or Hans Crouse and then depending on which the Rockies selected it would either from a group of Solak, Walker, Ornelas or Basabe or a group of Palumbo, Burke or Allard. and there would probably have to be another prospect like Garcia or Florentino.
expensive but worth it.
personally I would offer Crouse, Solak, Walker and Florentino as my initial offer

not my suggestion just based on Grant's suggestions. if the Rockies would take Odor in this trade scenario hell I would throw in $18M to get it done

I hate to give up the farm for Arenado. Better to overspend on Donaldson

So why aren't we pissed off that the owners didn't go after Cole?

IMO I'm not upset because for that money we could have 2 #2 caliber starters instead of a single ace. That was stupid money contract that I think the Yankees will regret before it is over.

However, they have such a good core that they are one legit Ace from winning it all. And they could win the next 3 WS with their team.

We are the Texas Rangers. Perception about us is like Tori Hunter said: "My kids didn't want me to play for Texas because their friends would laugh at them".

Texas needs to learn we aren't the Cowboys. We will NOT get any players to come here offering the same that a premier market like LA does. We will have to pay a premium until we are viewed as more than a AAAA team. Aside from a 3 year span around 2010, this team has never been a contender. That means you must overpay until you change perception. A plan to try to bargain or lowball is going to get you hung up on every single time. It's why our FA signings the last 5 years have all been guys trying to rehab but not wanting to do so in the minors. So go to MiLB+, which is Texas.

Nothing. Stupid money for a guy who's home/road splits say he will be a bust anywhere but CO.
