Penguins’ talks with defenseman Jack Johnson intensify

Sheahan, Rowney and Kuhnackl left to sign and ~5m in space. They'll have to trade Kessel or Maata to give JJ what he is after.

Word around here is Sheary is going to be dealt. And Sheahan may be back. The other 2 won’t be.

With the Rust signing Sheary is gone.
Rowney should be an AHL filler and Kuhackl should be glad with league min salary.

and that should end the Canuck's interest.
he was grossly overpaid in Toronto, so a raise???? nah.

latest
I would argue that for a guy who averaged 53 points per 82 games over the five years of the deal his $4.2 million AAV was probably as fair a contract as existed in the NHL during its span.

But yeah, I wouldn't want to be the team giving him a raise and (as some are reporting) a 3 year contract. The second he stops getting 1st PP minutes those numbers are gone.

High numbers were a big no no for Lou. He only let guys keep them if they were traded to the team and previously wore them (ex Mogilny).

Case in point: the highest number on a Leaf player's back at the moment is 51.

In fact, every player with a number higher than 35 was here before Lou and grandfathered in.

/The Leafs did not win a playoff round while Lou was here.

This was from the Athletic:

But The Athletic has learned that last weekend before Max Domi was traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Montreal Canadiens for Alex Galchenyuk, Fenton and Coyotes GM John Chayka did talk about a framework that would send Niederreiter and Zucker to Arizona for Domi and another forward believed to be center Christian Dvorak.

Just sayin but I'd gladly take Dvorak as a Bozak replacement.

Also from the Athletic (Tyler Dellow):

Calgary is, in my view, taking a significant risk that they’ve acquired two expensive players who will never be difference makers. In order for this trade to work well for them, they probably need to have one of those players be something that they haven’t yet proven that they are.

Not saying he's wrong, but Calgary didn't win a single playoff game during Dougie Hamilton's tenure with the Flames. If it's not working, then changes need to be made.

I'm really not seeing the risk here. They got the better player of the two at forward, they got a 21 year old d-man who's already put up 30 pts in a single season, the cap isn't really an issue in Calgary, the prospect they threw in apparently was at best 50-50 on signing there...

Even in a "change for change's sake" move it's pretty vanilla in terms of actual risk, and the payoff is Lindholm excels with new teammates and Hanifin can one day become what Hamilton already is.

The other thing I'd like to point out is that the players that Dellow says need to be difference makers are 21 and 23 years old. I think there's still a little time for development to occur, especially with Hanafin.

I'm sure it was discussed but apparently Dougie was a bit too comfortable with losing which was a main reason for changing things up. Too much smiling down the stretch.

I think he also bypassed the end of season interview which didn't sit very well with Flames brass.

/Also, if you believe some of the reports, Treliving has been looking to trade Hamilton for over a year prior to last week.
