The problem was that the original trade didn't include enough future assets to allow a new owner to put their own stamp on a newly acquired team.

Demps should have understood that, and Stern should have made his expectation clear to Demps.

And yes, it isn't impossible that lottery could have been fixed, but had they Pelicans done the Laker deal, they wouldn't have had those ping pong balls that allowed them to get Davis.

People forget that Dragic was in that deal. And that Lamar odom was traded like 2 days later for another first round pick.

It was just an overreaction to the lakers.

Yeah definitely sucks, but turn around could be faster depending on the haul they get back for him. Would you rather the team trade him for multiple picks or possibly some younger prospects with upside?
Why does he want out of San Antonio?

Celtics aren't getting Kawhi for Brown and picks. Probably gonna cost them Kyrie, Brown and picks.
Obviously not, the money doesn't match.

They have to add a Kyrie or a Horford.

But, Brown and picks would be the centerpiece.

If they add Horford, the Spurs could ship out Pau.

If you are the Celtics, would that be too much?

Horford is overpaid.

But, he fits so well.

Pau is washed.

I'd send Kyrie since I have Rozier.

I did not forget Dragic.

He wasn't highly thought of as a prospect at the time. The package would have made the Pelicans about a 45 win team with no stars and little upside. Exactly where you don't want to be. It was a shitty deal for NO and the resale value of the team.

Tearing it down to the studs and accumulating picks was by far the better way to go.

Agreed.

They can't trade Horford without getting a good big man back. Pau is not a good big man anymore.

They got Eric Gordon. Who was the best player in either deal....

And again, they were getting 1-1 either way.

And didn’t Gordon leave literally after that year?

Gordon played for the Pelicans for like 4 years.

And he was a young player with upside on a team friendly deal. Acquiring Gordon then is like acquiring Brandon Ingram now.

In other words, Gordon and picks were the type of young assets the Pelicans needed.

Not Odom, Dragic, Scola and whatever else they got.

Getting Gordon was like getting Lavine in the jimmy butler deal.

You need to post more.

I have to admit I do mostly post for my own self amusement.

But I do love the NBA draft and team building strategy in general.

You still need talent. In the end, Pop always had a top 10 player on his roster with the success he's had the last twenty years. If they trade Kawhi, that's not the case going forward. We saw what the Spurs were like without him (Kawhi) this year - first round sweep.

That’s true but it was without Kawhi and no replacement. If they can get decent return they’ll be good.

Who didn't see this coming??

Me and @Mecca and a few others in here called this like 2 or 3 months ago.

The writing has been on the wall for a while now.

C'mon Man!
In fairness, I changed my mind on the topic more times than a Kardashian in a locker room full of big, black, rich Dicks.

:noidea:

The other reason OKC was willing to give as much as they did for PG13 is because they needed to show commitment to winning in order to get Russ to extend. The PG trade accomplished that, whether or not PG leaves.

Yep, you're right. Forgot about that.

Exactly.

Priority one was getting Russ to commit.

Mission accomplished.
