As shitty as their pizza used to be they had nowhere to go but up.

I’ll pass.
Even though I agree with your comments in this thread about Papa Johns being pretty low quality, since you sort of seem to enjoy the high ground position that all mentioned pizza chains suck and people who like them need to get out more, let me ask you which pizza chain you enjoy? I'm interested...

As I said earlier... there is a local pub that produces a great wood fired pie that we hit up once every couple of weeks. My problem with chains is the lack of freshness. My first job in high school was at a small Texas/Oklahoma chain called Ken’s Pizza. Everything was fresh. We made our own dough and sauce as well as fresh veggies. Pizzas took 20-25 minutes to cook in ovens and not on conveyor belts. The crusts were crisp and done - not half ass cooked like the chains now. There are still a couple of Ken’s Pizza locations in East Texas and if we are out that way, we make it a point to stop at one. They still do it the way we did 40 years ago.

Agree on the freshness, I also have so many options near me that chain pizza places are never a thought....There are places around me, old school, family owned and in business for 50+ years....

We’ve got a Mom & Pop that has been here for around 25 years. It’s decent but they are a little inconsistent. They will serve in a pinch. But the pub pizza here is superior to anything Dominos, Little Caesars, Pizza Hut or Papa Johns can try to match.

well, in all fairness, lil caesar's doesn't pretend to be good, their whole schtick is selling you cheap-ass $5 pizza very quickly if you're on the go. it's godawful but hey, it's pizza.

We have a local pub that makes a great wood fired pie. That’s the only place we get them now although I’m planning on buying a stone for my Traeger and trying my own.
Pretty much all chains suck and blow. The mom & pop places rock!

i love how every couple months, there's a pizza thread about how everyone loves "mom and pop" and "authentic" pizza and how chain pizzas are a fate worse than death, blah blah blah, but if their workplace were to order up some pizza from a domino's or pizza hut they'll gladly be waiting in line for their slices.

actually, for the last 2 years, my favorite pizza to eat is from costco. season it up and add your own toppings and it's actually pretty damn quality.

Everyone should try and find the best independent pizza maker in their respective cities. It's usually way better. The chains all suck up here, but it's odd because the Papa Johns is still way better than LC, Doms or the Hut. It's probably been a year since I had Papa Js. Have they fallen off the cliff recently?

Best pies I have had in my city are usually from Greek/Italian restaurants that do it right with the wood fired or stone ovens. The conveyor belt garbage is horrible. Most of those places were staples for decades but have been disappearing one by one, it sucks.
