I love it

Everyone just automatically assumes he will suck, seems the "IN" thing to do

Not me, think he will be great

There are only three head coaches in the NFL that have tenured 10+ years:
  • Bill Belichick (deserves it; one of the greatest coaches in pro sports history)
  • Marvin Lewis (owner is inexplicably loyal)
  • Mike McCarthy (courtesy of quarterback greatness)
The Raiders do not have a first-ballot HOF QB. The Raiders to not have an inexplicably loyal owner. So that leaves being one of the greatest coaches in pro sports history as the only way he makes a 10-year deal worth the money. I give better odds on the Return of the Christ within the next 10 years than Gruden fulfilling that contract.

I like Gruden and think he will do okay. But a ten year contract at $100 million is a big gamble. Especially for a owner who does not have deep pockets

Impossible to endorse that deal for anyone not named Bill

But if Im a Raiders fan? Why do I care about contracts

Strictly from a football standpoint, Ill take Gruden over Del Rio and any available candidate 8 times a week

He'll need Tony Dungy to come in and build him a winning team before he can take credit for things.
How does this incredibly naive dig still have legs? :noidea:

Gruden built 1.5 of the teams that played in that Super Bowl.

As A Raider fan I would only care about the contract knowing that if it doesn't work out, the team could be stuck. How much of that contract would Mark Davis be willing to eat if things don't work out and how much longer will he need to be there? That is what would concern me.

I'd hire Gruden as Quarterbacks Coach and Assistant Offensive Coordinator on a 3-year deal at $500K/y and progress from there. If that's not enough to lure him out of the press box, let him stay there.

I hope the NFL is on the hook for fully-guaranteed contracts in the next CBA. That way, when an organization makes such an asinine move like this they actually have to fulfill the contract and eat the $90 mil when they fire him after one miserable failure of a season.

Pretty sure coach contracts are already fully guaranteed

Right, because Gruden did absolutely nothing to make the Raiders a competitive team during his tenure in the late 90's, prior to their advancing to the SB from the AFC side.

I'm not saying Gruden is the end-all be-all of good coaches, but let's stop this facade of him being a terrible coach because it's hip in the world of pop culture to do so

"Because, because Dungy's team, dude! "
