I think it makes sense for Lyanna to name him after his Targaryen heritage. The starks are rich in loyalty (she is a Stark) & tradition. Jon Snow was a Targaryen. She gave him his name because he was a Targaryen. Then had Ned hide his identity so he wasnt murdered as a child/Baby. I dont see any wrong in this thinking from Lyanna.

As far as Bran he doesnt see the whole pictures yet. & if we remember right when Jon Snow was Born in his vision his vision was disrupted before learning the name of the child. So dont see anything wrong with him not knowing (atleast for sure) Who the father was. Samwell easily filled in the blanks when they talked to one another. I am all good with that part of the story line as well. I think some here are looking just to hard for a screw up in the writing of this show.

I'm wondering what Dolorous Edd and the Night's Watch at Castle Black will be upto next season. Can't imagine it would be worth the White Walkers while to travel west to try and add those guys to their army would it? Will they have any way of knowing what happened at East Watch? And if they do, does their oath still require them to hang out at the Wall even though another section of the Wall has been breached, or do they travel south to help in the fight against the White Walkers?

If Bran knows what happened, or let's say Tormund/Beric/survivors of the walls collapse make it to the nearest castle and send ravens out, Winterfell and Castle Black would find out soon enough. The plan might be to consolidate forces at Winterfell or another point inbetween.

I mean, we know how fast these ravens fly......

With the annulment, Rheagar's first two children were considered illegitimate. Therefore, he's starting a new line with Jon Snow/Aegon and I'm sure believed that he would father two more children with Lyanna for the three heads prophecy.

Jon (Aegon) was coming of age. It was time for him to know.

I fully trust that Ned intended to tell him the truth.

Plus, Jon had already given up all family to join the night's watch. Also by design so Ned could keep him safe by sending him to the wall.

Question I thought of that is irrelevant, but still intriguing to me.

In season1 when Ned leaves for King's Landing and parts ways with Jon Snow he tells John that he would tell him all about his mother when he returned....

...Wonder if he was planning on telling him the real truth, or a doctored up version that still fit the "bastard" narrative?

I think another underlying question here is did Ned even know he wasn't a Sand bastard? Did he know that Rhaegar was married to sister? Did he have time to find that out or only who his parents are.

My assumption is that he probably put the pieces together when she said that his name was Aegon Targaryen and that the only other person in the kingdom that would've possibly have known might've been Howland Reed.

I just don't get shy Ned never told his wife. They were two of the same and Jon would have had the same life only Cat would have been a bit nicer to him.

I too think Ned woulda told him the truth at some point. He was going to be married to the wall by that time and no claim to the throne. It also makes the scenes where he was not about to send assassins to kill Dany a little stronger when you go back and look at them.

Cat would have blown the secret. She thinks he is a bastard and despises him. She finds out he is actually the son of Neds late sister who he saved as a newborn she would have been overprotective. Someone's spy in the north would have seen it and eventually he ends up dead.

Even on the wall a legitimate Targaryen heir would have been seen as a threat

I think Ned did intend to tell him the next time he saw him because the next time he saw him he would be a member of the Night's Watch and after taking his vows would no longer be a threat to the Crown. He likely wanted to avoid any conflict between his best friend and son/nephew. He probably wasn't sure if Jon would make a move or not but didn't want to risk it, which is why he wouldn't want to tell him before he took his vows. Even if Jon had no interest in the throne, Ned would still be concerned that Jon might carelessly start blabbing about his true parents, and knowing that Varys has "little birds" everywhere it would almost certainly get back to Robert.

Fair...then why was Robert so obsessed with Vicerys and "this girl in the east who will soon start spreading her legs"? And why was Cersei having all of Roberts bastards found and eliminated?

I thought it was Joeffrey that ordered the death of Roberts bastards. He knew the rumors and didn't want anyone staking a claim to the throne.

Pretty much the only calculating move he ever made

In theory the army of the dead has breeches the wall and is headed south so Castle Black is as safe as Pyke.

On the show the army of the dead is going to discover the teleporter and Castle Black goes down two scenes into the season 8 premiere
