I mean, you're not likely going to pay a guy $7 million when he's your 5th defender, getting 17 to 19 minutes per game. Probably not even $5 million or close, at least not anymore. That MacDonald mistake won't be happening anymore.

These particular guys won't be put in enough offensive situations to bump their stats high enough to warrant that kind of money. So, I'm not at all worried about having too much depth here at any one position...Lol

We keep the ones we truly believe in and either keep the others at a lower rate or dangle them as trade bait for other pieces that we do need.

A true sniper on the wing would be nice, yes. Someone for G to dish the puck to, because he still does that pretty well. Voracek too.
Ok with that being said we would be diminishing the value of at least two of the young d men by playing them only 17 to 19 minutes per game while not being in offensive situations. Why wouldn't we trade them now for that winger or big offensive threat while their value is high and then we wouldn't have to wait two more years before we are contenders.

I'd consider doing it now for sure. If something like the Pacioretty rumor were true, I'd do it. I'd prefer someone closer to 24-25 instead of 28, but Pacioretty is a proven 30 goal guy.

I don't think anyone knows what we have yet (ourselves included). You're not going to like this answer, but the process has to be seen out and we need to know where we stand with more of these prospects at the Nhl level.

I really like to think that most of these guys aren't at their peak value right now. Even if they are, why trade them for a scorer that we could lose for nothing in two or three seasons?

This is an exciting time, but we're really not in that position yet where one more big piece makes us serious contenders. I like Elliott a lot, but are we going to ride him and Neuvy all the way to the Cup? I really don't believe so, no matter who we add.

Yes, we have some truly elite rookies coming in (along with others who have a season or two under their belt), but to win it all or go for it with them in year one or two? Probably not happening.

I think it'd be a total waste with Pacioretty. I won't harp on his age too much, but he only has two years left on his deal and then he could walk. Doesn't really help us 3-4 seasons from now when we should be really good.

But, like you say, if we get a vet, I hope it's a guy who has more prime years left so he can actually help us win a Cup.

All of that said, I expect our overall record and points totals as a team to improve this coming season. Everyone needs to learn from Sean Couturier, honestly. Yeah, only 34 points in 66 games, but he was a +12 and still 6th in scoring for us (with virtually zero pp production). Our top five scorers were a combined -91. It's just embarrassing.

I dont see how we are going to be good 3-4 seasons down the road. We know we will have good defense but what offense will we have 3-4 years down the road?

I know we're down on them right now (they will bounce back), but Giroux, Voracek, Couturier and Simmonds could all still be with us, and not ancient either.

Patrick, Konecny, Lindblom, Rubtsov, Vorobyov, and Allison. Some of those on the way this season obviously or even already here. Fazleev, Leier, Bardreau and some others possible too, but not necessarily likely. Even guys from the draft we just had like Ratcliffe, Frost etc. could be with the big squad by then too.

We'll have more than enough cap space by then too to be signing or trading for guys to fill in the gaps and form a powerhouse team.

You mention the good defense. A lot of these guys will be able to jump up and provide offense too. I would venture to say most all of them even. Definitely Provorov, Ghost and Sanheim.

Even though i think that players like Gee Voracek and Simmonds will be way past their prime i will go along with this type of thinking for now. I however think if we have a chance now to trade one of our defenseman for Pacioretty we should do it immediately

Agree with Mav.. in 3-4 years the forward lines could realistically be

Konecny-Patrick-Voracek
Ratcliffe-Couturier-Simmonds
Allison-Giroux-Frost
Lindblom-Vorobyov-Rubtsov

If those guys develop, which some of them have done a great job of already, that would be a pretty formidable forward group to go with a potentially dominant defense. Not to mention the extremely high potential of Hart and Sandstrom to boot.

Granted, it's pretty unlikely all those guys develop to their potential, but that's without adding any pieces from free agency or trade. To have hope for an NHL lineup built 75%+ from the draft is incredible.

Ill worry about all the holes i see here in 4 years lets get out to a good start this season and do some surprising damage.

If those guys pan out and they're able to keep that group together, both big ifs I know, but that would be a loaded forward group IMO. You can move guys around a bunch, ie moving Giroux to wing as well. Frost to 2C, Coots to 3C, Giroux to 3RW. For example.

Yes and at that stage, there could be some upgrades at wing, aside from our homegrown ones. Pieces we had collected via trade or free agency. Our top guys now won't have to be relied on as our top guys then.

It's potentially very deep too. The 4th line you listed looks like it could be our 2nd line, to me. A good one too.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about on defense or in net at that point either, like you say.

A lot is made of the defense and goalies obviously, but Hextall deserves a little more credit for the forwards IMO. Ratcliffe was listed as a 1st rounder in many publications this year, and Laberge was last year. Add that to the actual 1st round picks in the system like Laughton, Konecny, Patrick, Rubtsov, and Frost and the Flyers have 7 1st round pick forwards in the system. Plus Vorobyov and Lindblom as late round bloomers.

So damn bright. Im giddy again.

The clarifying statement that I read (for what it's worth this time of year when news is slow...) is that the Flyers want to get Pacioretty but the Habs want to move Galchenyuk.
