That's what I was wondering in my post - was it supposed to be some tactic?? I just didn't understand it. For a tactic to be effective it has to impair the person in some way. Gaethje didn't look affected by those punches in ANY way and it makes sense that he wouldn't be.
I get trying something different in the first 2 or so rounds, but Ferguson had to know (or the corner should have told him) coming into the 3rd round that he was losing this fight and maybe it is time to get a little bit more serious and technical considering he was taking a beating. I made mention on the UFC forums that I thought Ferguson looked slow during the fight - I wonder if he was just looking past Gaethje.
He weight cut for no reason a few weeks back for his April fight. Because of course he did, he's Tony Ferguson. Weight cuts are extreme and they harm the body. Doing it twice in less than a month can put severe strain on you.
Additionally I thought Tony was scared to engage any sort of grappling with Gaethje because of his wrestling background. Also I think the game plan was just to get let Gaethje gas himself in the first two rounds. All of his recent wins were by KO in the 1st round. In the UFC his 4 wins previous were by 3 1st round KO's and a 2nd round TKO of Michael Johnson in his first fight. His only two other fights that went 3 or more rounds he lost. I think their corner also got over confident when Tony put Gaethje down in the 2nd round like they were starting to pick up momentum. Tony just never adjusted.
