He's going to be pretty decent, I'd say.

To be honest, knowing it's another Gerrit Cole situation where he's inevitably going to end up with the likes of the Dodgers or Yankees takes a lot of the excitement out of it for me.

Though I still love the game, it is hard for me to be as invested in MLB as I was as a kid in the early 1990s just before the economics of the game completely shifted, as Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla left the Pirates.

The owners did not hold their ground as strongly as the NFL owners did in the 1970 and 1980s, ultimately leading to a cap.

It also didn't help having ultra competitive owners like Steinbrenner with money to burn, who had no issues with driving the salary structure through the roof.

I’m just glad the Cubs won one in my lifetime, and they were up there in payroll that year, even top 5 I think. That group of guys was special though.

Actually, the Cubs had the highest payroll that year. Bought. But good for you that it happened.

where the fuck are you getting that from? they weren't even remotely close to the Dodgers in payroll.

I was going off memory from when I was doing something like this comparing salaries over the last 10 years. I did it about 5 years ago so maybe my memory is just .off

I do know there were multiple lists that included 25-man roster, full payroll including injured, not including injured, etc. I just had it in my memory that whatever list I was looking at the Cubs were either at or near the top that year.

Back to Skenes, his "splinker" pitch is just wicked.

I learned the term “sweeper” last year. I’ve never heard of a splinker. What’s it do and what kind of an existing pitch does it approximate?
I guess they call it that as it has aspects of a split fastball and a sinker. How it moves I can't describe. It kinda tails to the right and then suddenly drops.

I think the writers/commentators following Jhoan Duran first popularized the usage of "splinker."
